In the mid 90s, the Austrian Federal Railways dreamed about a uniform fleet of multi purpose locomotives, commonly exploited with German rail operator DB. Part of this fleet would also become available to other operators that could lease or rent locomotives. In 1997 the Siemens announced being the winner of the battle about one of the largest and ambitious fleet renewal programs in modern Europe. For approximately 1,2 Billion Euro Siemens delivered 400 high performance locomotives between 1999 and 2006, with a continuous power rating of 6400kW and a hollow-shaft drive propulsion system providing the machines a top speed of 230 kph. Top of the bill machines for a very small price… The first prototypes were built in Siemens works Munchen-Allach, but for serie delivery, assembly was taken over by the OBB work shops in Linz.

The OBB built a complete new brand around their new Ferrari red painted machines, including a logo and a brand name: TAURUS, which is Latin for bull, the correct plural is therefore TAURI.
The order included two basic versions, sometimes referred to as Taurus 1 and Taurus 2 series. First are the 1016 designated machines, only capable of running under 15kV AC catenary systems, secondly the 1116 series was introduced, with additionally the possibility to switch to 25kV AC catenary systems.
But things did not work out as planned. The German railways backed out from the plan to start a common fleet with the OBB, which now had to find employment for 400 new machines itself. Secondly, the OBB expected the 1116 series, capable of running under two different catenary systems, to start a true international career, crossing Swiss, Czech and Slovakian borders for example. However many different obstacles were overlooked or just not expected.
What started as an ambitious plan to become Europe’s leading supplier of modern locomotive power resulted in a large surplus of locomotives with only a limited service domain. In 2003 the OBB started negotiations with Siemens about changing the volume of the initial order. The final solution was to let Siemens develop and alternative to its 1016 and 1116 series that would make it possible for them to compete in modern international rail transport again. The result was presented in March 2005: the 1216 ‘Taurus 3’ series. The number of 1116s ordered could be reduced in favour of this new machine, but in the mean time still 332 original Taurus machines were delivered. Curiously however, the OBB increasingly succeeds in renting out Taurus machines to other operators, so its initial dreams seems to come true a bit after all...

[AT] Third time: ÖBB presents a new -Licht ins Dunkel- Taurus: no. 1116 158
For the third time, the Austrian railways (ÖBB) have given a Taurus locomotive a -Licht ins Dunkel- promotional livery. The 1116 158, which recently became a RailJet locomotive, now has a dark blue livery and is traceable in the OBB Lokfinder. The 158 was baptised and presented officially on 23.11.2016 at Vienna's Hauptbahnhof. Picture: Christian Blumenstein
-Licht ins Dunkel- is a fundraising campaign for charity. It is the third time a Taurus locomotive is used for promotion. In 2002, the brand new 1116 100 was selected. In 2011 it was ÖBB 1116 126. Two pictures below:

ÖBB has published a sexy image of RailJet-train in NightJet livery. However, it will operate the NightJet trains using conventional coaches. These are currently being refreshed, refurbished and repainted.
Soon, ÖBB 1116 157 will be released with a new promotional livery for the Austrian police. We will update as soon as we know more and have the first images.

Exotic shots by Krassen Panev today: They show ÖBB 1116 257 (on one picture assisted by a diesel locomotive 232 600) on trial in Simeonovgrad, Bulgaria. In the weeks before, OBB 1116 072 and 255 were also participating in the test runs on the branches Svilengrad (BG) - Kapi Kule (TR), Plovdiv - Stamboliyski (BG) and Dimitrovgrad - Simeonovgrad (new!, BG). Considerable speeds were reached on these routes: 160, 184 and 227 kph respectively.
A level crossing, a car, a train. Sometimes not much is needed to (almost) destroy a locomotive. It happened to ÖBB 1116 212 back in 2013. In Öttevény in Hungary it unvoluntarily met up with a car and catched fire. The heavily damaged locomotive ended up with a fried cab. (Márk Fekete)
During the past years, the Linz workshops however managed to repair it. And now it is back in service. The image below shows the fresh 1116 212 + 1116 222 with RJ 160 followed by 1116 225 with RJ 560. (Elias Pranti)

RCH's 1116 049 pulled the train from Vienna to Kúty (SK>CZ border). From there OBB 1216 227 piloted the train to Břeclav (CZ>PL border) as the 1116s are not yet approved for services in the Czech Republic. Austria-Hungarian rail operator GySEV is searching for new locomotives for quite a while now. In 2014 it issued a tender for nine new electrics, but this never resulted in an order. A new tender is expected.
Next to its own 470 series locomotives, GySEV is currently using hired ÖBB 1116s and MRCE ES64U2 for its services. As of 01.09.2015, ELL Vectron locomotives will be added to the GySEV fleet. In Autumn a second ELL machine will follow. They should replace the ÖBB electrics. (Rail Business)

[AT/HU] ÖBB 1116 058 has lost its GySEV stickers [updated]
Since 2009, GySEV was hiring 1116 058 from the Austrian railways (ÖBB). Like the other ÖBB 1116s in long term service of GySEV it got green and yellow stickers and GySEV logos. But they're gone.
Update: Main image shows 1116 058, freshly repainted, in the standard ÖBB design.
We received this image of ÖBB 1116 142 today. The locomotive is red, just like most other 1x16 series locomotives in Austria. But previously, this machine was painted in the colors of the City Airport Train in Vienna (CAT), just like ÖBB 1116 141.
Both locomotives have had two different CAT liveries. The first version was applied to 141 and 142 in December 2005. They got a redesigned version of the livery in 2010. In 2012 the Austrian railways decided that they needed the two dual frequency locomotives for other services, so the CAT services were taken over by the single frequency 1016 014 and 036 (again in CAT livery version 2).
Update:
1116 141 was in Linz for repaint from 19.09. to 02.10.2013.
1116 142 from 18.04. to 07.05.2014.
Remember the peculiar crash of ÖBB 1116 173-4 (I) and its run away car train, packed with brand new Dacia's? The images of the cars being scattered around in the gardens of different houses in Braz are still amazing. A dis-functional braking system (a connector underneath two carriages hanging too low above the tracks was destroyed) made it impossible for the loco driver to slow down the speed of its train while coming down on the Arlberg Line. This finally ended with a derailment because of too high speed.
Well, the locomotive obviously suffered heavy damage and finally ended up in the Linz workshops of the Austrian railways. It was not repaired. Instead, the ÖBB decided to use the last spare body for Taurus locomotive that was stored in Linz. In 2013 the assembly of a new 1116 173 was started. And today is the first day of service of this new locomotive. Its details:
Most likely this is the very last new ÖBB Taurus locomotive to be built, 15 years after this type was introduced. All three spare bodies that Siemens once delivered to the ÖBB are now used (There is also a 1116 017II and 1116 062II). - GR

[SK] 1116 series locomotive testing (again) in Slovakia [updated]
The Taurus is back in Slovakia. It has been tried before, but until now without success, getting this locomotive type approved for commercial service in this country. On 26-28.11.2013, new trials were performed for VVÚŽ Žilina (Railway research and development institute in Žilina). The results will tell if there is a possibility that 1116 series locomotives can run on ŽSR's (Slovakian railway infrastructure manager) tracks in the future.
26.11.2013: measuring energy consumption in various modes of movement and with different speed between stations Trnava and Nové Mesto nad Vahom. Locomotives used are 1116 044, 2x OBB 2016 and 4x Bcmh coaches.
27.11.2013: Measuring compatibility with 25 Hz detection circuit receivers at station Bajč. Trial between stations Bajč and Hurbanovo for measuring compatibility with line crossing. Trial with a trainset starting from Hurbanovo station for general measurements.
28.11.2013: Measuring electromagnetic compatibility of the 1116 series with axle counter type ZK24 by station Chotín. - JP/LG
Tauri go strange places. This images shows ÖBB 1116 259 and ÖBB 1116 255 are seen minutes before their departure from Dimitrovgrad North station. They're heading the first container trains from Austria to Turkey. - KP
On 13.11.2013 Franz Renkin, representing Red Bull Media House Publishing, and Manfred Oschounig, representative of ÖBB-Werbung inaugurated the locomotive with the new Red Bulletin promotional livery. Railjet locomotive 1116 222 is chosen for this project.
Just weeks after the first one, now a second Austrian locomotive got a full promotional livery for the Österreichische Automobil-, Motorrad- und Touringclub. 1116 153, has lost its CATS musical livery and got this red and yellow one instead. - DG
That 1216 141 was selected to be the first ÖAMTC locomotive was surprising. The locomotive promotes a typical Austrian institute, but runs a substantial part of its services in foreign countries. With 1116 153, ÖAMTC will be more visible in its own country.

[AT] ÖBB 1x16 series: third spare body into production
In 2008-2009 Siemens delivered three extra bodies for Taurus locomotives (ÖBB 1016/1116 series). They were registered under works number 21628, 21629 and 21630. They were stored at Linz, around the workshop.
The first two bodies mentioned have been used to rebuilt the 1116 062II and 017II respectively. Of both the original locomotive were K.O. after a heavy accident.
Now also body #21630 is inside the Linz workshops. It is expected it will be outshopped as ÖBB 1116 173II, replacing the locomotive that was severely damaged during the spectacular crash in Braz. It derailed on the western decline of the Arlberg. Remember all the Dacias being thrown around? - bahnforum.info

For many years, two locomotives of the ÖBB 1116 fleet have been used for hauling the dedicated city-airport-express (CAT) in Vienna. 1116 141-1 and 1116 142-9 have had two different special CAT-liveries in the mean time. But this will change.
Both 1116 series locomotives will be replaced by two single-frequency locomotives: 1016 014-1 and 1016 036-4. Since the last week of October, the first one is already in Linz for preparation. The 036 will arrive in the third week of November. - RG

[AT] RailJet fifty-one
Today, the very last RailJet composition was delivered to the Austrian railways (ÖBB). It got a name: RailJet fifty-one. And that is what it is, the 51st RailJet train. The ÖBB also repainted (and partly refitted) 51 locomotives: 1116 201-251. Only 1116 250 kept its livery, as it is a promotional one for the Austrian police.
Although the RailJet trains are not in service for such a long time yet, their general concept already needed a revision. Spaces for bikes are now being prepared, and the ÖBB discovered the bistro was just not good enough. The RailJet gets a fully fledged restaurant now.
Also, the ÖBB decided to cancel the order for the remaining sixteen RailJet rakes (once 67 compositions were planned). Siemens now tries to negotiate with the Czech railways for selling some of these remaining sets.

The new 062 was assembled in Linz during the past half year, using spare body #21628.

[AT] various Taurus news
Today, OBB 1116 003 left the workshops of Linz, carrying a new promotional livery for Rail Cargo Austria.
Up till now, the OBB has hired 1116 011-016 and 018-020 to MÁV Cargo. Except for no. 011, al units should have the MAV Cargo design by now. - GGV
With completing the reftrofit of 1116 213, the first batch of RailJet-units should be complete: 1116 201-223. Only the 201 still needs some extra attention as it did not get the full package, being 'prototype' for the batch.

[AT/HU/CH] RailJet update
Yesterday, commercial services of the OBB RailJet concept have started. Several 1116 series locomotives have been modified for these services. They get a repaint, a third pantograph and Swiss and Hungarian safety systems aboard. The machines that have undergone this treatment at this moment, as far as we know:
1116 201 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Vienna
1116 203 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Linz
1116 204 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Austria
1116 205 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Europe
1116 208 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Germany
1116 210 > being retrofitted
1116 214 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Hungary
1116 215 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Salzburg
1116 217 > being retrofitted
1116 218 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Zürich
1116 223 > finished, nicknamed Spirit of Innsbruck
Who else has more information regarding this topic, please help us to complete the list.
Since 2004, GySEV has a long term contract with the OBB for hiring five 1116 series locomotives, to be used in Hungary and Austria. Therefore these machines need to be additionally equipped with the Hungarian EVM 120 signalling system. Originally, 1116 061-065 were retrofitted and hired to the GySEV. In May 2007, 1116 062 crashed and the OBB had to provide a replacement locomotive for the 062, which could not be repaired anymore. 1116 060 was selected and is since July 2007 in service of the GySEV. However, this unit could only be used in Austria, as EVM-120 was not installed and approved yet. This process has been completed now and 1116 060 can finally cross borders. - GA

Just a little more than a year ago, OBB 1116 235 had a accident. It collided with DB's 145 020. The machine, at that time in service of ITL, had to be transported to Linz for repairs. Finally this took more than a year, as on 04.10.2008 the machine made its come back by ITL. That day it was spotted in Saarmunden. The machine has no special vynils, just the normal OBB logos. - DSO

[AT] RailJet roll-out [update]
Yesterday, the official roll-out of RailJet took place in Austria. For the first time a 1116 locomotive was present, fully retrofitted, with skirts and full RailJet repaint. Also 1116 215 now has the new livery, but still misses the skirts. The RailJet 1116s carry D/CH/A/H in their UIC grids and carry NVR service numbers: A-ÖBB 9381 1116 xxx-x. Appearntly the locomotives are now officially registered as train sets, as '93' does indicate this.
A RailJet set will also be present at the upcoming Innotrans. The picture shows 1116 201 with a RailJet rake running around Berlin. This engine has the RailJet livery, the silver skirts, but not a third pantograph yet. It does have a camera on its roof for keeping an eye on the pantographs.

1116 201 is painted in the final RailJet livery, which is different on details compared to the dark red and grey colours of the 1116 200 (the demonstrator of the red RailJet livery). Cab number two which will be coupled with the new RailJet rakes, is painted completely grey upfront and the bottom is decorated with a silver line for example. As far as we know, the machine has not got all the neccessary signalling systems yet, which will make it possible in the future to use these locomotives in Hungary, Austria and Switzerland.
1116 204 however, is equipped with MAV-EVM, ÖBB/DB-PZB + LZB and SBB ZUB signalling systems, and has got silver painted skirts by its bogies, transformator, and mirrors, but is still painted in the normal red OBB livery.
1116 215 is in Linz right know and its the first Taurus locomotive with RailJet livery and MAV-EVM, ÖBB/DB-PZB + LZB and SBB ZUB signalling systems.

[AT] future of OBB 1116 017 and 062
Both machines mentioned in the title of this news item have been destroyed during a crash in 2007. The remainings of 1116 017 (red) and 1116 062 (red with GySEV logos) are stored on the terrain of the Linz workshops in Austria and are completely stripped down, as far as this was possible... Every part that was still usable has become spare part in the work shop. We can say that both machines are the first ones of their type to be scrapped.
But, although Siemens does not produce the classic ES64U2-platform anymore (in production until 2004), the OBB managed to close a deal with the manufacturer from Munchen, that includes the construction of three new frames and bodies. First two will be used to built replacements for the two crashed machines, a third body will be a spare, who knows what the future may bring. - EBFO/EO/OBB

[AT] Railjet takes final shape
During the last weeks first pictures were published of the first Railjet rolling stock under construction by Siemens in Vienna. Railjet will be the new semi-high speed premium product for passenger services, at the end of this year to be introduced by the Austrian Railways, OBB. As already known, the final livery for these trains will be dark-red and dark-grey with a bright red line, and designated Railjet.
Since 2007, locomotive 1116 200 is already running in the new and final Railjet livery, but as from yesterday a second red Railjet-machine can be admired; 1116 201. On details, it differs om some points from the 200, as it 'rear'-front is now painted dark grey. Railjet-locomotives will be used with rakes in push-pull service, in fixed combinations, so that they have a unsymmetrical painting, with a front and a rear.
It is expected that soon more machines of the 1116 series will change color. Possibly the batch will cover a selection of the machines with service number 1116 195-upwards.
Of course, just a new paint is not all. Railjet services will cross Austrian borders into Switzerland and Hungary. The locomotives will therefore get ZUB262 and EVM120 signalling systems on board. In the first weeks of March, 1116 204 was undergoing these technical modifications.

ÖBB 1016/1116: Design
The mechanical concept of the multi purpose OBB 1x16 series is based on the DB 152 series for the German operator DB. The 152 is freight locomotive, its design being a result of a combination between cost efficiency and the DB demanding a uniform look for all new products part of its latest investment program (including 101, 145 and 152 series).
The OBB wanted to have a more distinctive look, supporting the progressive character of their project and the top performance of the new machines. Also, for a machine that could speed up to 230 kph, aerodynamics become an important design factor. additionally, the new design should also increase active protection by crashes.
The result was awarded with the 2001 Brunel Award for railway design by the Watford Group. The Taurus locomotive design got many positive responses, and its cab design in combination with its red colour soon resulted in nick name ‘Ferrari auf Schienen’ or Ferrari on rails’, a name gladly accepted by the OBB of course!

ÖBB 1016/1116: Customer specific packages
By delivery, 1116 001-025 had a third pantograph for services in Hungary, but those were removed on all machines in 2004 and 2005 after overhead wiring in Hungary was adjusted. 1116 001-025 also are equipped with the Hungarian EVM-120 train detection system, up to today. 1116 061-065, which are leased to GySEV, also have EVM-120 on board.
In 2005, 1116 001 performed trial runs equipped with European Train Control System ECTS, and was at that time not approved for regular services in Austria. ECTS has been removed now.
The OBB 1116 series are being used for regular services into Germany, al the way up to Hamburg in the North. 1116 035-059 are therefore equipped with German 'zeitmultiplexe Wendezugsteuerung' (ZWS) systems. This makes it possible to operate these machines from driver-trailers, so they can be used for push-pull services.

ÖBB 1016/1116: Two machines for the RWB
In 2003 the production of 1116 series locomotives at the OBB workshops of Linz was on full throttle. In May 2003 however locomotive 1116 131 appeared without having its full service numbers applied up front (they just said 1116 ..1-.) and the large white OBB logos were missing! Then it got service number 1116 911-7 and it was planned to deliver the all red machine as such, but there were some complications; With this number the loco was not allowed to run in Austria! So for its dynamic trials, and for one week, the machine got its originally planned service numbers back; 1116 131. At that time, the purpose was of all this ´number-magic´ was still unknown, up to the end of May. A new German-Austrian collective for freight operation, named RheinWeserBahn, purchased it. In November 2003 a second machine changed identity in the exact same way: the planned OBB 1116 171 became Rheinweserbahn 1116 912.
Picking out one or two machines for a small order from a large ongoing production, in order to be able to guarantee a short delivery period, happens more often. For the 1x16 series, assembled in Linz, the Rheinweserbahn machines were the only two machines that got another employer during production, but production line in Linz became more flexible later on, as from the production for 1216 series for example, 6 machines were diverted.
However, Siemens had to meet contract requirements, so two extra machines had to be built to fill the gaps that 1116 131 and 171 left behind. And so happened. In October 2003, 1116 131 II left the workshops, in May 1116 171 II had its maiden run.
ÖBB 1016/1116: Accidents
this is what was left of 1116 017 after its crash...
As for all means of transport, accidents occur in railway transport every day. With 332 machines on their way everyday, Taurus locomotives are often involved in Austria. Most accidents result in relatively small damage, somethimes the locomotive is not even affected at all! The 1x16 series have special crash buffers to adsorb energy by a crash. They often prevent the machines to be damaged more seriously. However, despite all safety measurements nowadays, still things can go terribly wrong. The human factor is still a big risk. This sub section describes locomotives that had to be put aside or even scrapped afeter an accident.
1116 017 / 06.02.2007 - Collided onto a freight train with 100 kph at Szöny, between Budapest and Vienna. The driver was killed. For 60% completely destroyed. The machine was returned to Austria on 25.02.2007, where it finally was strored on the OBB work shops of Linz. All re-usable parts were taken out and used for 1116 017 II.
1116 062 / 18.05.2007 - The unmanned 1116 062 (at that moment on hire to the GySEV) crashed down a mountainside, after derailing in a curved track section with a speed of 150 kph. The destiny of 1116 062 is unknown, first a thorough investigation has to be done to find out who was responsible for this very curious accident and the economic feasibility of repairing the machine. It's recovery from the steep and wooded mountainside already required a serious amount of money, comparable with the price for a whole new locomotive... 1116 060 was selected to replace the 062 in service of the GySEV.
1116 235 / 19.06.2007 - This machine was not so badly damaged as the two previous ones, but is mentioned as it was on hire to another oprator at the time. ITL was using the machine, while it frontally collided with Railion 145 020 in the German town of Dörwalde. ITL got replacement right away; 1116 239.
1116 173 / 16.06.2010 - The 173 derailed and was knocked over on a curvious single track section in Ausserbraz (AT) with a car transport train, climbing down the Alpes and heading for France. The exact cause is unknown to us but the train could not brake anymore and the driver lost control of the train. It was only a matter of time before the complete convoy was destroyed.
ÖBB 1016/1116: three additonal bodies
Under works number 21628, 21629 and 21630, Siemens built three extra 1x16 bodies for the ÖBB. The first one (21628) arrived at the work shops of Linz at the end of 2008. The 21629 followed shortly after that and no. 21630 came in during the summer of 2009.
#21629 > ÖBB 1116 017 (II)
Body no. 21629 was used first and its completion took almost a year. In December 2009 it was outshopped in Linz as 1116 017 (II).
#21628 -> ÖBB 1116 062 (II)
In November 2010, the Linz works outshopped 1116 062 (II). This locomotive was rebuilt using body #21628.
#21630 -> ÖBB ?
The third and last spare Taurus body was transported from its outside parking place in Linz, into the workshops in February 2013.
