We had to wait for more than four years, but on 24 July 2008 the big day was there: the new Skoda 109E locomotive had its official roll-out. In Pilsen the blue and silver painted locomotive was presented for the international press that day. With the completion of the machine a whole new era has started for Skoda, presenting its first new electric locomotive development in fifteen years. With the 109E Skoda enters the third millennium with a product that has international ambitions and which does meet all the latest European standards. It is flexible and modular, has a top speed of 200 kph and is compatible with both AC and DC catenaries; basic characteristics of a multisystem locomotive nowadays.
The development of the 109E was initiated after the Czech national railways (CD) awarded Skoda with an order for 20 multisystem electrics in May 2004. The CD already started a first tender for new electrics back in 2002, but a second tender was needed, supported by European funds, to make it possible for the CD to really place an order. The CD plans on using their new locomotives, the designated CD 380 series, for passenger services on main corridors in their home country. Additionally, the CD plans on homologating the 380 series for Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
initial exterior design of the Skoda 109E
Very soon the first design impressions leaked, giving the world an idea how the exterior design of the 109E would be. What we saw was a very futuristic looking silver machine with a rounded cabs and side grids with diagonal lining. Porsche Design was responsible for this design, which immediately gave a face easy to recognize to the new and ambitious plans of Skoda.
revisited exterior design, meeting the EN15227 impact resistance standards
After that, the long and difficult phase started of making a feasible locomotive, able to fulfill its purpose, without loosing the original identity of the design. This process took around two years. In 2006 the final design was presented with a 1:20 scale model on the Innotrans 2006 international railway fair in Berlin. In December that year also a first body of the 1:1 scale version was ready for static testing. It was immediately clear that the looks of the 109E had changed drastically in the mean time.
the first complete body of a 109E is transported to for fatique tests at the end of 2006
Especially the construction of the cabins of the machine had to go through a long process of redesign to meet all the latest regulations concerning driver safety (e.g. fire resistance) and crash impact (deformation zones and energy absorption). Skoda states that the construction of the 109E corresponds to the specific characteristics of the Central European rail infrastructure. The 109E can deal with small curves and minimizes wear on the tracks. Last but not least, the 109E is prepared for installing ECTS, the European standard on board safety and signalling system.

[CZ/DE] Rumors thicken: Czech railways want Vectron for services to Germany
It is buzzing around for some months now: The Czech state railways (ČD) plan to hire new locomotives for its Prague - Berlin - Hamburg EuroCity services. Most likely ČD will go for Siemens Vectron locomotives, 10 units, with a top speed of 200 kph. ČD is having fast locomotives fast locomotives on its wish list for the ECs to Germany and other services as well. (via Rail Business)
True, CD does have fast multi system electrics in its fleet, the 380 series produced by Skoda. And yes, they are homologated for Germany and approved by the German EBA railway authority, but the German infrastructure manager DB Netz has put restrictions on their top speed. At this moment the machines are not allowed to go beyond 120 kph, making them practically useless for revenue services. DB Netz wants to know if the forces caused by the machines can possibly damage certain bridges in Germany. New measurements have been done are now being evaluated. To be continued.

[DE/CZ] CD 380 series prepares for its debute in Germany
Railvolution.net reports: On 15 December 2015 ČD’s 380.015 realised a series of test runs across the border between Germany and the Czech Republic on the line from Děčín to Bad Schandau. The tests formed part of a standard procedure, to check that the control system was functioning correctly as the locomotive traversed the voltage break and the transition between the Czech and German ATP systems. Satisfactory performance during these tests was the final condition stipulated by DB Netz before the Class 380 locomotives are allowed to haul passenger service, at least as far as Dresden.

....
An arbitration court issued its ruling on a protracted dispute between national railway ČD and Škoda Transportation over the late delivery of 20 Type 109E Class 380 multi-voltage electric locomotives on November 16.
The court ruled in favour of Škoda Transportation, rejecting ČD’s claim for compensation and saying ČD must pay the outstanding balance of KC468m, plus KC760m under a clause covering inflation.
....
Remarkable: ČD states that the 109E locomotives are still not approved for Germany, although EBA has given its fiat in May 2015. DB Netz however has blocked the operation of the locomotives. The envisaged use of the locomotives for EC Trains from Prague to Dresden this December is therefore postponed.

Skoda Transportation's 109E locomotives have been granted an unrestricted approval for revenue service in Germany. The 109E is now officially homlogated for the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and Poland. The 109E also complies with TSI High Speed RST.
Railcolor: Skoda's press statement gives us some nice details about the approval process, which was challenging according to Skoda's CEO, Tom Ignačák. The authorization process, as done by the Eisenbahn Budnesamt from Germany is described as complete and uncompromising. EBA's technical assessment goes down to the smallest detail.
Skoda states it has invested approximately 36 million euro (950 million CZK) in the development and homologation of its 109E multi system high speed locomotive platform. At this moment twenty units have been built for the Czech railways (CD). ZSSK from Slovakia owns two machines. Soon, the German railways (DB Regio in this case) will get six machines for its Nürnberg-Ingolstadt-München (NIM) high speed express. The importance of the German homologation is therefore evident.

On 11.10.2013, ČD locomotive 380 011, still in its euro2012 livery, visited Eastern Slovakia. It arrived with fast train R 607 at 18:13. It returned the next day with train R 602, departing from Košice at 06:15 in the morning. Currently, the CD 380 series is being evaluated on the AC voltage part of the Slovakian rail network. - JK
We got a extensive explanation about the CD 380 003 being in Bratislava. We have rewritten and extended the text:
Locomotive ČD 380 003-4 was seen in Bratislava main station last night. The machine was being used for training drivers of the Slovakian railways (ZSSK), which was finished in only one day. The fact that only drivers that have experience with the similar ZSSK 381 series were selected for this training sped up things.
True, the CD 380 series already runs in Slovakia, but on DC lines only. Currently they run to to Žilina, four times a day. Until 11.10.2013, 380 003 can be seen hauling various regional passenger trains on AC lines too. The locomotive runs in one diagram between Kuty, Bratislava and Leopoldov. Approval for AC lines is important for future services with the CD 380 machines.
Finally, it is the plan to use the 380s for EC trains from Prague to Budapest. Probably this will not happen before 2014. Still many technical issues have to be solved in Slovakia and Hungary. - PK/JP/DG
Iho.hu brings a extensive report about the Skoda 109E trials in Hungary, that have been performed in the past weeks. The colorful ČD 380 011-7 arrived in Hungary on 08.08.2013 and was since then evaluated under the supervision of Prvá Slovenská železničná (PSŽ). Also check the nice video from the drivers cab that is included in the report.
Emil Zátopek was a runner, famous for winning three gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He was nicknamed the "Locomotive". So its obvious, one day a locomotive should get have is name, and that is exactly what happened today.
In Prague, CD 380 007 was presented sporting the name of Mr. Zátopek, who past away in 2000. The machines was baptised by Ms. Dana Zátopková, wife of Emil and also a Olympic gold medal winner (Javelin, Helsinki 1952).
Interesting are the details in this report about the event. Unit 007 is one of the machines from its batch that got the newest software version installed. On the video one sees that the UIC grid on the frame is filled with many countries: A, D, PL, SK, H.
"We expect full approval of the locomotive in Austria and Poland by autumn 2013. Approval in Germany is expected by the end of this year"
"Even abroad there is interest in our locomotive and the penetration of western European markets seems promising. Deliveries of about 40 locomotives for three different customers are being negotiated".

[CZ] D1 Express is coming [updated]
A new job for the CD class 380 locomotives. Starting at October 4th, 2012, the Czech Railways will operate the new D1 Express service connecting Prague and Brno. This new train will complement existing services on this route, but will be non-stop. A five car train will run twice a day in each direction offering extra service aboard (wifi, food and beverages, electric outlets etc.) and connecting both cities in 2 hours and 42 minutes. More information here.
On this route, CD is successfully competing with the road. Rising demand inspired the company to introduce additional train services. They will be hauled by CD 380 class locomotives, starting at a speed op 140 kph max. In December it is planned to speed up to 160. That will make the service seven minutes faster. - MF
Today, ČD 380 011-7 has its first day of revenue service in its new 'Vlakem na Euro' livery. It will leave from Prague, bound for Ostrava. It will not enter the country where Euro2012 takes place today. The 380 011 will turn in Bohumin, close to the Czech-Polish border.
The Czech national football team plays all matches in the group phase in Wroclaw (on the 08th, 12th and 16th of June). The Czech railways therefore plan special charter trains from Prague to this Polish city. Next to the 380 011, also a 163 series locomotive will get the special livery. This locomotive can be used for border crossing services.
According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the Czech national football team will travel to Poland by train. They will leave on 03.06.2012. The 380 011 will be exhibited at the Czech Railday on 19-21.06.2012. - rynek-kolejowy.pl/ JP / JS

[AT/CZ] impounded CD 380 004 free again [update]
380 004 was impounded in Austria on 22.05.2011. It became subject if a legal dispute between Skoda and Bombardier. In 2002 both manufacturers closed an agreement on building locomotives for Eastern Europe together. However, Skoda terminated the contract unilaterally, says Bombardier. Seizing the 380 004 should have increased the pressure.
Now, unit 380 004 is on the run again. It was stored at Wien-Inzersdorf, inside the work shop of the Wiener Lokalbahnen. On 05.11.2011, the locomotive was seen in Vienna.
Update: On 07.11.2011, the 004 was still in Vienna and currently parked on one of the last track left of the old depot Wien-Süd. The reason is that a document which shows the good running-condition of the vehicle (German: Lauffähigkeitsbescheinigung) is still missing. Rail Cargo Austria has to wait for that to be able tow it (with a regular goods train, as the Czech Railways wishes) to Breclav.
Update 2: On 11.11.2011, the 004 was seen on transport back to CZ.

[DE] Skoda 109E in Germany, Austria and Switserland
During the past months, the Skoda 109E (or Skoda 380 series) is tested extensively both in Austria and Germany. 380 019 was also seen in Based, Switserland. We bring you some impressions of 380 006, 017 and 019 which were involved in trials. The most important milestones of the 109E testing/delivery program up til now:
- 380 004 was impounded in Austria on 22.05.2011. It became subject if a legal dispute between Skoda and Bombardier. In 2002 both manufacturers closed an agreement on building locomotives for Eastern Europe together. However, Skoda terminated the contract unilaterally, says Bombardier. The German-Canadian manufacturer already had shared important knowledge and technical drawings on how to built a modern multi-system electric locomotives. They now want a one million euro refund for this. Seizing the 380 004 should increase the pressure.
- The 380 004 was replaced by 380 019, that then completed 200 kph trials in the Austrian westbahn (ATP LZB testing).
- On 29.06.2011, the 380 019 was the first 109E to haul a commercial freight train to Vienna.

Skoda sends us the new 380 001 for the Czech Railways for the Innotrans 2008 fair. The public was very curious about this new machine, as they had to stand in line to have a quick peek at the interior last Wednesday. In Berlin, the machine is placed next to the Travca demonstrator from Spain, a unique image, that we probably will never see again...
