In July 2010, SBB Cargo awarded Stadler Winterthur a SFr88m contract to supply 30 electro-diesel locomotives for shunting and light freight duties. The two-axle design is derived from the electric Ee 922 locomotives. Stadler Rail has nicknamed both shunting locomotive products 'Butler'.
On 14.10.2011, SBB Cargo and Stadler Winterthur AG presented the new hybrid locomotive, type Eem 923. In 2012, first commercial services with these new machines started.
Unit no.005 was present at InnoTrans 2012. The pictures the new machine amongst many other new vehicles with Swiss roots.

[CH] New hybrid locomotives under delivery [updated]
23.10.2013, that's the official delivery date of SBB Cargo's newest hybrid shunting locomotive, unit no. 923 027. On that day, static tests were performed with the brand new locomotive. On 24.10.2013 dynamic tests were done, followed by multiple locomotive control tests the next day, together with 923 026.
[updated] Like most SBB Cargo 923 series locomotives, the 027 got the name of mountain close to its working area. 923 027 has two different names, one on each side: Montagne de Boujean (FR) and Bözingenberg (DE). This is the same mountain, but in different languages. 923 027 will be allocated to Biel/Bienne, where people speak both languages in the same town. - PT
BTW: 923 025 > Schlossberg, 923 026 > Hofberg.

[CH] SBB Eem 923 shunting in diesel mode
Switserland's rail network is known for its very high degree of electrification. But that doesn't mean diesel traction is redundant. This website features SBB Cargo's Eem 923 hybrid shunter series, that can run both in 'electric' and 'diesel' mode. But images of the latter situation are rare here. Luckily we got this image (left) of Eem 923 009 shunting in Flums on 16.08.2013, in diesel mode. They are part of this report. - PT

[CH] SBB Cargo Eem 923 001 in revenue service
This morning, SBB Cargo commisioned the first Eem krupp_2884_02 series locomotive, after the official ceremony at Limmattal marshalling yard, near Zurich. During this happening the Eem 923 001-2 got named after a mountain nearby; Heitern. Because all locomotives will be stationed in regional operating centers, they will all get a names from local mountains.
It took Stadler 576 days to get the first locomotive ready for regular service. The second locomotive will be delivered in May. The remaining 28 units will be completed at a rate of one every three weeks, with the last due to enter service at the end of 2013. When completed, only three different types will remain in the SBB Cargo fleet for shunting operation; the Tm 232 tractors, the dieselhydraulic Am843 and the hybrid Eem 923. - cargo-blog.com

[CH] SBB Cargo and Stadler present the first Eem 923 hybrid shunter in Winterthur
On 14.10.2011, SBB Cargo and Stadler Winterthur AG presented the new hybrid locomotive, type Eem 923, for the first time. Early 2012, SBB Cargo will start service with the first of the 30 locomotives ordered. They will enable an environmentally-friendly and more efficient line and delivery service.
“It is the most modern and innovative shunting locomotive currently on the market,” explains Hartmut Dietrich, General Manager Stadler Winterthur AG, at today’s presentation of the first vehicle. According to Dietrich, the newly developed shunting locomotive represents a milestone in the company’s manufacturing history. It is based on type Ee 922, which SBB’s Passenger Division is currently using successfully for shunting operations. Although similar in appearance, internally the new hybrid locomotive differs from its purely electrically driven predecessor. “Alongside a doubly powerful electric drive, the Eem krupp_2884_02 also has a supplementary diesel auxiliary drive to serve sidings without a contact line – which significantly increases efficiency,” illustrates Alberto Cortesi, Head of Engineering at Stadler Winterthur.
The hybrid drive is ideal for SBB Cargo’s purposes. Since the Eem 923 is suitable for both line operation and shunting, SBB Cargo gains palpable flexibility in its production. “With a maximum speed of 100 km/h, the new locomotive will make it significantly easier to use free routes on the heavily loaded Swiss rail network,” explains Michel Henzi, General Project Manager at SBB Cargo. Furthermore, SBB Cargo is expecting significantly higher availability of the vehicles, combined with lower operating and maintenance costs. “Once all 30 of the locomotives ordered are in operation from 2013, the operating costs will drop significantly, just through operation using mainly electrical energy. In addition, CO2 emissions will be reduced by more than 4,000 tonnes per year,” says Henzi.
For Jürgen Mues, Head of Asset Management and Member of the Management Board at SBB Cargo, the hybrid locomotive is just as much an efficient as an innovative solution, “With this vehicle, we consciously decided on a particularly environmentally-friendly shunting locomotive which is also highly energy-efficient.” Mues also sees the vehicle as a clear commitment by SBB Cargo to wagonload freight in Switzerland.
As a pioneer in European rail freight, in future SBB Cargo is committing to shunting locomotives with a hybrid drive. In July 2010, SBB Cargo ordered 30 new, dual-axis vehicles of type Eem 923 from Stadler Winterthur AG for CHF 88 million. The advanced, high-performance shunting locomotives will be delivered in 2012 and 2013 and will operate in light-to-medium shunting and line service. They will replace the existing shunting locomotives of type Bm 4/4 and various triple-axis locomotives and traction engines which are no longer able to serve modern requirements. Both the maintenance of these shunting vehicles and their age-related increasing susceptibility to faults have resulted in spiralling costs. Thanks to the new purchase, SBB Cargo is able to reduce variety in the shunting and delivery service fleet, enabling more efficient operation and maintenance of the entire vehicle fleet. The Eem 923 fits perfectly into the fleet: between the locomotive type Am 843 (a diesel locomotive with particulate filter) for heavy shunting service, and the modernized locomotive Tm 232 (also with particulate filter) for light shunting service. - press statement Stadler Rail
