On 29.06.2010, Siemens officially revealed its new Vectron platform, locomotives that have to guide Siemens into a new era, the era of flexibility rather than multifunctionality.
The development of the Vectron started back in 2006. There are three main reasons why Siemens decided to (or better: had to) built a complete new concept:
1 - The current models (2010) for electric locomotives that Siemens offers are the EuroSprinters ES 64 F4 and ES 64 U4. Both were developed for one specific customer, the German and the Austrian railways to be more precise. They comply to the specific demands of these two operators. However, they lack the flexibility that many other customers (smaller open-access operators and lease companies) desire. Theoretically being able to run in every country in Europe doesn't bring much for these customers, it makes the F4 and U4 expensive and stuffed with a lot of equipment that is never of rarely used. Siemens tried do down-trade the F4 and U4, but it was not a success. The market nowadays asks for machines that only just does that what's needed at that time. And when the service domain changes, a locomotive should be easy the adjust to its new environment. Flexibility has replaced multifunctionality. With the F4 and U4 Siemens has to search for customers that fit the machine's properties, in stead of offering a product that everyone could use. With EuroSprinter family, Siemens has no answer on the Traxx AC from Bombardier for example, nor the Traxx DC, popular models at this moment. With the Vectron, Siemens should be able to compete with the Traxx platform again, as well as the also newborn PrimaII platform from Alstom.
2 - Siemens also needed to take a next step as legislation and technical requirements progress. Driver safety, emission standards are getting more strict every year and there will be a moment that the EuroSprinters do not meet the standards anymore. When tha moment arrives, the Vectron should be there to take over.
3 - Don't forget that the development of the F4 started almost 10 years ago, back in 2000. In the mean time, also the technical possibilities have improved. Technically, there is more possible now, everything is more mature. Also the Vectron is a technical upgrade, everything up to date again.
Remarkable features
Driver Table design: For the Vectron, Siemens decided to hire industrial designers to reconsider the driver table set up. There are two base versions of the desk, a 'low' version, as shown in picture 1, installed in the AC-prototype and a 'high' version as installed in the MS-prototype, see picture 2. Which version to choose depends on the question how many detection systems are on board and how many displays/modules are needed to supervise them. When a locomotive with a low driver desk is being adjusted and more systems are added, Siemens will replace the complete table by a high version, instead of adding separate modules.
High impact cab: Since the introduction of the LE4700 series for the Portuguese railways in 2006, Siemens has a cab module, meeting all up to date TSI crash standards for railway vehicles. There was no need for a redesign (it differs only on details like a smaller grid up front for cooling), giving the Vectron a familiar face. The cab module can be (de)mounted very quickly. The opening for the screen wash reservoir (the black cap) is now on the outside. In the current models you can find this feature inside the cabin, resulting in being used as urine reservoir...
Bogies: All Vectron configurations will have the same bogie design. Its technology is based on the 'Ritzhohlwelle' concept, already used for the EuroRunner models. Customers can order a 160 or a 200 kph version. Siemens experiences that the market requires a base version that can be used for both freight and passenger services when needed, so 160 kph is than the absolute minimum. With the current ES 64 F4 and its 'Tatzlager' propulsion bogies for 140 kph Siemens can not offer a suitable solution. When required, Siemens can adjust the top speed of 'Ritzhohlwelle' bogies, without exchanging them completely. This would approximately take one week.
Cab windows: Remarkable is that the Vectron has no cab side windows anymore. As the Vectron has back facing cameras in stead of mirrors, Siemens marked such windows being redundant.

Rail Business reports: Siemens has booked a first success with its Vectron DE locomotive. In late November, Infraleuna ordered one locomotive, making it launching customer of the type. Delivery of the new locomotive will take place in the first six months of 2017.
Since yesterday, Siemens Vectron 193 902 is in the Netherlands again. Th homologation of this type of locomotive for this country is still ongoing. Yesterday the machine ran light from Arnhem to Kijfhoek shuntyard. Today it has been used for trials between Lelystad and Zwolle.
Martin Voigt just sent in these two impressive images of a transport train with three Vectron locomotives and RailAdventures 103 222.
Leading locomotive is the multi colored MRCE X4-640 now with TX Logistik logos. For the first time we have a good picture of the complete machine, as this was not possible at the InnoTrans. Behind the 640 we see RailAdventure's 103 222 and Siemens 193 844. All the way in the back we see Siemens 193 971 on loco buggies. The locomotive recently came back from Finland, where it served as pioneer for the VR Group Sr3 series locomotives. Sr3 no. 3305 from the InnoTrans was sent to Finland instead.
A fresh picture of Siemens' Medium power Vectron no. 192 961. The machine, with new NVR number and delivery date (02.09.2016) hauled a special train from Berlin to Munich on 24.09.2016. Thanks Michael Raucheisen.

[DE] Vectron convoy arrives at Mönchengladbach [updated]
On May 24, an Vectron convoy consisting of two electrics and two diesels arrived at Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof, most likely for further transport to the Siemens test centre at Wegberg-Wildenrath. The transport comprised of Vectron DE locos 247 903 and 247 904, as well as Vectron AC 193 930 (with diesel module) and Vectron MS 193 902. The sighting of 247 904 means there are now at least four of type. (Dr. Günther Barths / Wolfgang Scheer)
Stopar Carlo sent us this fine image of the Siemens DC Vectron no. 191 001 in Italy. The locomotive is currently hired to freight operator InRail. The machine pulls an ethanol train from Villa Opicina to Ravenna and is seen here in Bivio D’Aurisina.
Catch them before they go. These images show Siemens 193 923 and 924, both hired to CargoNet from Norway, at the workshop of Grorud near Oslo. The machines are being used for freight train to Bergen at the Norwegian coast, however the 924 was out of service when these images were being made. The machine needed some wheel reprofiling. Most likely, CargoNet will return the Vectron locomotives to Siemens in June, as the operator now has many extra TRAXX AC2s in its fleet, that were hired from Railpool after competitor CargoLink decided to stop its freight services.
[SE] Who wants to drive the Vectron locomotives of Snälltåget?

[SE] Who wants to drive the Vectron locomotives of Snälltåget?
Snälltåget is a train operator from Sweden. The company is known for it passenger services in Sweden and operating the Berlin Night Express linking the German capital with Scandinavia.
Now Snälltåget has announced it is looking for drivers, as it wants to run trains by itself, using its own personnel, starting in September. That is not all, the company also announces it will be using Siemens Vectron locomotives.
Railcolor: Currently CargoNet is reforming its fleet. The freight operator has taking over most of the Railpool TRAXX locomotives that came off lease after CargoLink terminated its train services. Sources tell us that CargoNet will therefore return the two Vectron locomotives (edit: 193 923 and 924) to Siemens. This means they will be available again later this year. Also interesting, Siemens confirmed that test bed locomotive 193 970 is currently in Sweden.

On 01.06.2015, Siemens 193 822 was seen in Câmpina, Romania. The test bed locomotive left Bulgaria after completing the homologation runs on 27.05.2015.
We showed you the RailAdventure transport with several locomotives two days ago. 187 009 und 193 901 were parked in Mannheim, as shown in the two title images. NS E 186 016 and 017 were taken to Emmerich and continued their journey into the Netherlands, to Amsterdam.
Having the 193 901 back in Germany, means that the tests with double Vectron traction in Switzerland are completed for now. 193 902 was left behind in the Alp country. Beneath an image of the final run together of the two white locomotives:

[SK] Vectron locomotive receives authorization for Slovakia
Slovakia's approval body has granted permanent authorization for the Vectron multi-system and AC versions to operate in the country, thus permitting the Vectron to travel on the Slovakian rail network's routes without restriction.
Yes, we hold a bit back on this topic. We got many many nice images of the 193 822 in Bulgaria during the past weeks, many thanks for that! Today Siemens' published an official statement about the tests, so we decided to bring all we got at once:
Siemens: In April, Siemens’ Vectron electric locomotive was sent to Bulgaria to undergo authorization tests. The tests were carried out near Sofia, the capital, as well as on one of the main lines connecting the western and eastern parts of the country. Authorization will enable the Vectron family to further extend its coverage by serving an important freight corridor between Europe and Asia.
The locomotive used for the trials was the 6,400-kW multi-system version of the Vectron equipped for running on both AC and DC power. A special 1,600-ton freight train was used for the trials and consisted of 13 freight cars as well as a second electric locomotive at the rear.
Part of the tests were conducted on the picturesque sub-Balkan railway line, which is one of the toughest routes in terms of topography, featuring the longest gradient in the network with 16‰. The test route also included the Koznitsa tunnel, the longest in the country at nearly six kilometers.
The envisaged authorization of the Vectron in Bulgaria marks an important milestone in the roll-out of the Vectron family in Europe. Intermodal transport between Europe and Asia has seen a substantial increase in recent years. Some of the leading European freight operators are introducing new services such as shuttle container trains and trailer transport between Germany and Turkey. When authorization is finalized, the Bulgarian link will complete the rail corridor from Germany to Turkey.

Don't forget about Siemens Vectron demonstrator 193 930. In February the machine with shunting module (okay: Last mile module) was taken to the Velim test tracks in Cerhenice (CZ). Now it performing tests and LokoTrain has published the very image we see of the electric running without using the overhead wiring:

On 26.03.2015, four white Vectron locomotives were seen entering the Czech Republic. Now we know which machines were seen that day: Siemens 5 170 020+021 (formerly hired to DB Schenker and stickered red), 5 170 034 and multi system 193 823. It means there are no Vectron DC machines at this moment in Poland, other than the red ones delivered to DB Schenker Rail Poland.
This month the have been making their rounds with Siemens 193 930, making a all white Siemens loco train:
As from today, we know there is a third Vectron DE stock locomotive: 247 903. Is picked u today by the colorful MRCE X4 E - 876 to go to the transport logistic fair in Munich. (Thomas Stenzel)

[CZ / TR] Official: Vectron approval for Turkey and Czech Republic
It was mentioned before, but today Siemens has officially published the information that their Vectron locomotive is fully homologated for both the Czech Republic and Turkey (Railturkey.org stated this was already done on 07.11.2014).
Vectron locomotive authorized for Czech Republic
The Czech Rail Authority has granted final and full authorization for the Vectron multi-system and AC versions to operate in the Czech Republic. The Vectron locomotive can therefore run on all sections of the Czech network without any restrictions.
Authorization for Vectron MS in Turkey
Following the successful conclusion of all tests in 2014, the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) authorized the multi-system version of the Vectron locomotive in March 2015. The authorization covers the entire Vectron family, paving the way for the Vectron’s operation in Turkey.
As part of the authorization tests, a Vectron equipped with Turkish and European train control system (ETCS) not only operated on conventional routes, but was also tested and used in service on the high-speed rail line between Istanbul and Ankara operating at speeds up to 200 kilometers an hour. The Vectron mastered all the commercial test operations as well as heavy-duty loads. The tests covered a total of more than 25,000 kilometers.

[DE/FI] Siemens sending out the first Vectron locomotive to Finland (193 971) [updatedx3]
In the past months, Siemens has prepared to first Vectron locomotive for test runs in Finland. As from 2017 Siemens will deliver 80 hybrid locomotives (+97 option) to the Finnish state railways (VR).
Of course, this requires extensive testing. Siemens wants to take out every risk. Finland has completely different climatic conditions which the new machines need to endure effortlessly. Temperatures as low as –40 °C should be no problem for both diesel and electric engines of the machines.
Today, a new Siemens stock locomotive left Munich, bound for the harbor of Rostock, numbered 193 971. At first sight it is 'normal' electric Vectron AC locomotive, but as you can see it is placed on bright yellow colored 'loco buggies'. Finland has a different track gauge, 1524 mm instead of our 'standard' 1435 mm. So this Vectron has a wider track gauge and needs the loco buggies for transport in Germany.
The white 193 971 is decorated with stickers commemorating the 160 year long history of Siemens' presence in Finland. The company's relation with the country dates back to 1855, when Siemens built its first telegraph line in Finland. Additionally, the locomotive sports the slogan 'Vectron kotonaan suomessa', in English: the Vectron at home in Finland.
To prevent that people will misinterpret this item: Siemens has pointed out today that this locomotive is not part of the final batch for the Finnish railways. They call the 971 an 'advanced locomotive for testing purposes'.

[EU] Time to go home. Vectron 193 821 returns from Turkey
A year and three months after passing through Bulgaria for the first time, Siemens Vectron 193 821 (now homologated as TCDD class E87000) was spotted on its way back from Turkey at Iskar Station on a snowy day in Sofia. The promotional stickers the loco initially sported are gone, but the 87000 designation still remains.
A peculiar piece of information on the journey back is that this time the loco was transported by a regular freight service from BDZ Cargo, pulled by a Skoda 64E electric heading for Serbia. On its way to Turkey, back in the summer of 2013, the Vectron was transported by a DB Schenker special train along with a Velaro trainset which came from Romania. - KPSiemens Vectron locos used for test and promotion

Lately we have informed you on the preliminairy type approval of the Vectron MS in the CZech Republic and Slovakia. On 10.11.2014 also Vectron DC locomotives were granted approval for 'commercial test service' on the Czech network. [update] The approval is restricted to lines from the PL/CZ border to the stations Petrovice u Karviné, Bohumín and Lichkov.
This permit is valid for the Polish Vectron DC locomotives with the service number 5 170 034 - 049. The first one of this batch is a white Siemens demonstrator locomotive. The others are red and in service of DB Schenker Polska.
Vectron MS no.193 901 is back from its trip to Hungary, and again being used by Lokomotion right now. The freight operator now uses three Vectron locomotives for its services. Next to this white one, we have recently seen ELL 193 212 and Railpool 193 805. The latter ones are also used in double traction. - MR/PT
By us, this raised the question, what if Lokomotion had its own Vectrons, what would it look like?
Rolling stock coming home from Berlin. Vectron DE 247 901 is now fully homologated for Germany. It therefore could take itself home, in this case the Siemens' test center in Wegberg-Wildenrath. It is pulling a train including the PCW8 EuroSprinter and a C2-metro for Munich. - NE/WS

update 2014|10|01
[HU] Siemens Vectron MS 901 in Hungary
The very first Siemens Vectron MS locomotive, built in 2010, has transferred from Austria to Hungary. Previously Siemens was testing the locomotive with various other types of locomotives in service of freight operator Lokomotion. On 29.09.2014 the machines was seen in Budapest-Ferencváros. This week it is testing in Hungary, operated by Floyd. - JR/MF/KL
Three different Vectron-locomotives were present at the outside track area of InnoTrans 2014. Two were taken there by Siemens, one by leasing company MRCE. Nice extra: Vectron cab-modules could be also be found in both the inside and outside booth of the German manufaturer. In the outside booth Siemens used the cab-module for demonstrating the use of augmented reality during maintenance and service of rolling rolling stock. (The other module predominantly served as bar.)
Siemens took the electric Siemens Vectron AC locomotive no. 193 970 to Berlin. This is a stock locomotive (no.21924) built in 2014 and off-factory equipped for services in Germany, Austria and Hungary. Its top speed is 200 kph and it has a 6.4 MW power output, the most commonly sold configuration for such a machine right now. After 2010 and 2012, it is the third time brings the Vectron AC to InnoTrans, without major changes. The novelties of the 970 are therefore limited to its signalling equipment. After the fair, the white machine will serve as a test bed locomotive in Norway, Sweden and Denmark countries. At the fair the machine was already equipped with the necessary ATC and with ETCS equipment.
Siemens Vectron locomotives are already being used in Norway (CargoNet) and Sweden (Bla Taget for example), but the missing link here is Denmark. Once homologation for this country is completed, Siemens will be able to offer its customers a 'bridge'-locomotive, a machine that connects Germany and beyond with northern Scandinavia. Until now only Bombardier has such a product in its portfolio (Traxx AC2 DE/AT/DK/SE/NO). When maintaining the HU-approval for the Vectron, its package could be just a little more complete compared to its Traxx opponent, although it is up to the market if this will become reality.
For Innotrans 2014, the 193 970 got promotional marks about Easy Spares. Siemens' program for spare part services.
The second Siemens Vectron locomotive at the fair, has a subscription to the event, we guess. It is presented for the third time already (2010, 2012, 2014). It is the one and only diesel-version ('Vectron DE') produced on the basis of the platform until now. In the past four years, the '247 901' designated locomotive has been used for many trials in Germany and Austria, testing many different components. However, this has not resulted in a firm order for the Vectron DE. The market potential of such a machine in Western Europe is limited anyway.
The exterior of the machine slightly changed over the years. Promotional stickers were replaced in between the three fairs. This time the 247 901 features a 'Cheetron' or a 'Vectah', symbolizing the efficiency of the 160 kph diesel-electric. Also, the locomotive has not got a destination display up front anymore.
During the fair, Siemens announced that it officially received the full authorization of the Vectron DE for Germany. It is the first approval for the DE. With the AC- and MS-variants, now all Vectron-base versions have approval for Germany.
Vectron no.3 at Innotrans 2014 was one of Siemens' customers, lease company MRCE, that featured the specially restyled X4 E-875. MRCE has currently received 17 Vectron AC-locomotives. Their number will grow to 35 units at the end of 2015. The X4 E series (as MRCE calls its Vectron-machines) must be seen as the successor of the MRCE ES 64 U2 series, being built by Siemens in 2000-2005. One by one MRCE is selling these machines to railway operators.
The X4 E-875 is homolgated for Germany, Austria and Hungary and has a top speed of 200 kph. Next to freight operators, it is therefore available to MRCE customers that are planning faster passenger services.
Just before the fair, X4 E-875 got a new livery in Munich. This new livery features many important destination cities from all over Europe. Its symbolizes the interoperability MRCE offers to its customers with its locomotive fleet in general. The particular locomotive shown at Innotrans has a much more limited service domain.
Additionally, the X4 E-875 has additional logos of its current operator, being Transpetrol from Germany. It is currently one of the heavy users of MRCE Vectron-machines.
InnoTrans 2014 is over. And yes, so much news still has to be published on this website. We are working on it! First a big thank to all people we met during the past days. It was amazing.
Meanwhile, freight had to be moved throughout Europe. The world does not pause for some fancy exhibition. Some remarkable facts from last week:

A fresh Vectron locomotive to start the weekend with. Yesterday both 193 812 and 193 814 had their maiden run. The image shows the latter one mentioned. - MD
Both engines are part of a batch of five to be delivered to Railpool (193 810-814).
The multisystem version of the Vectron locomotive received authorization from Germany’s Federal Railway Authority (EBA) in June. Vectron MS is equipped for operation under line voltages of 15 and 25 kV AC and 1.5 and 3 kV DC. It has a nominal rating of up to 6400 kW and is built for a top speed of 200 km/h.
The authorization process also included the approval of additional functions such as an electric brake effort of up to 240 kN, multiple unit operation via ZMS multitraction control and ZDS double traction control, and double-heading with other Vectrons as well as with classes 120, 152, 182 (ES64U2) and 189 (ES64F4).
For an AC or multi-system locomotive, other customer-specific versions can be certified through a delta review based on the first prototype that has now been granted authorization. The transfer of Vectron MS authorization to neighboring countries like Austria is in full sway.
The first Vectron MS locomotives were ordered by the European Locomotive Leasing GmbH (ELL), which concluded a master agreement with Siemens in March 2014 for as many as 50 Vectron locomotives. - Siemens
The Norwegian Railway Authority (SJT) granted authorization for the AC version of the Vectron on July 1, 2014. The Vectron AC is designed to operate on alternating voltages of 15 and 25 kV. This authorization applies to Vectrons built for a nominal rating of 6400 kW and a maximum speed of 200 km/h.
Network stability is a particular challenge in Norway. The reasons for this are the rotary converters used at many places in the system which can cause harmonics problems in connection with modern three-phase AC propulsion vehicles. Vectron passed these required tests immediately. - Siemens
Railcolor: CargoNet is already operating two Vectron-locomotives in Norway: 193 923 and 924.

The test campaign involves Siemens, RFI (with its two E402B), InRail/Fuorimuro (drivers) and Italcertifer (the mechanical tests railcar), together with five coaches rented from OBB. - MS
The 962 arrived in Wegberg-Wildenrath test center last year. The 961 arrived last Friday, and it was the first time we saw this locomotive outside the Siemens Munich factory. Based on the dirt on its side, the 961 is not completely and most likely already stored in Munich for some time before it traveled the north.
As as we know, these two locomotoves are the only Vectron AC locomotives with 5.6 MW duration power. They therefore represent the medium power configuration of the AC type. The are also the only Vectron electrics with destination displays. All other AC and MS machines have 6.4 MW duration power under AC catenary systems.
Indeed, Siemens also exhibited a locomotive designated as 192 961 during InnoTrans 2012. But this was Siemens 21695 - Siemens 193 922 temporarily renumbered for the railway fair. Conclusion: two different machines have carried number 192 961. - Siemens

[TR] Vectron: tests in Turkey have started
On facebook, Siemens announces the start of the first trials with the Vectron. Multi-system locomotive no. 193 821 was sent to the Bosporus in September 2013 for this purpose. Apparently Siemens regards Turkey as an interesting market for its Vectron locomotive platform. It mentions the optional shunting module (up till now only installed in a AC locomotive) for this locomotive being interesting for this country.
There was only one Vectron testbed locomotive left, which still had the old front design (similar to the Belgian 18/19 series): machine no. 193 901. The image shows this locomotive with new head lights and front design including red markings. - TG/MP

[EU] Vectron meets all applicable EU requirements for approval
The Vectron series of locomotives has completed its certification procedure for conventional rail transport in accordance with the Technical Specification for Interoperability TSI CR LOC&PAS. The EC certificate was presented yesterday by Ulrich Wiescholek, Head of the German notified body Eisenbahn-Cert (EBC), to Karl-Hermann Klausecker, CEO of Siemens Locomotives and Components.
“Vectron is the first electrical locomotive platform to be certified according to this specification in Europe. The certificate enormously simplifies for us the process of national approvals with regard to the expenditure and the time required. This means we have taken another important step toward approval of the Vectron throughout Europe”, said Karl-Hermann Klausecker on receiving the certificate.
The Vectron locomotives thus meet all standardized, pan-European technical specifications for the approval of locomotives. These specifications not only include the TSI CR LOC&PAS, but also the TSI HS RST for rolling stock of the trans-European high-speed rail system, Class 2 (vehicles with a maximum speed of between 190 km/h and 250 km/h), the TSI SRT (safety in rail tunnels), the TSI PRM (access for persons with restricted mobility), the noise requirements according to the TSI HS RST and the TSI NOI (rolling stock - noise) of conventional rail transport, and the TSI CCS (control, command and signaling) when using an ERTM system.
This has established the basis for obtaining the individual national approvals in Europe more easily and with considerably reduced test expenditure. At present, the approval authorities of all EU member states are aligning their national approval requirements with the TSI regulations. This means that only those national requirements that are not covered by the TSI still have to be met. These are being notified to the European Railway Agency (ERA) as National Technical Rules (NTR).

[HU] Vectron receives homologation for Hungary
The Hungarian railway authority Nemzeti Közledekesi Hatosag (NKH), has granted the Siemens Vectron full approval for Hungary. This permit is valid for the Vectron AC with 6.4 MW duration power and a top speed of 200 kph. During the last summer, Vectron 193 924 was in Hungary for the necessary dynamic homologation runs. - Siemens
A modular platform, such as the Vectron, and TSI regulation make it now relatively easy to get other versions accepted in a country, once a basic version is approved. For the Vectron, Siemens now has approvals for Germany, Austria, Hungary, Sweden, Poland an Romania. The Vectron AC was presented in 2010 with DE/AT/HU/RO markings. This package can now become reality.

[DE/SE] Two Vectron locomotives for Paribus: the facts
Siemens has sold two Vectron locomotives to Paribus Rail Portfolio III. They will be handed over to the customer in December 2013.
We already brought the news about 193 922 being repainted in the livery of Railpool.
Both locomotives will be hired to a Swedish passenger operator for at least three years, as of December 2013. They will be used for passenger services. blataget.com is mentioned as the operator.
Almost two weeks ago, a Vectron stock locomotive arrived at Wegberg-Wildenrath. This machine, the designated Siemens 21700 - Siemens 192 962, is equipped with various passenger service installations, including the easy to recognize destination display upfront. Currently, the machine is configured as a medium power (5.6 MW) AC electric locomotive with a top speed of 160 kph. - Siemens
The relation between Vectron and passenger services is getting stronger. More operators seem to be interested. As we have already written in the Railcolor book, the (multi system) platform locomotive is currently the best alternative for (new) passenger operators that want to enter the fresh market for international passenger services. Locomotives are available, and most important, have the necessary approvals for many European countries. Combine them with second hand or new coaches and you have a good solution for the short term. In the more distant future, train sets are likely to take over, but it will take time to develop suitable concepts, affordable to open access operators.
For now, we see good opportunities for loco-hauled, medium distance passenger trains in for example Sweden, Germany, the Czech Republic and in the Netherlands and Belgium. With its ready to go 200 kph version of the Vectron, Siemens can play a strong card here. A comparable Bombardier Traxx version is not available at the market. Only Skoda can offer an alternative with its 200 kph 109E platform right now. Next to a high maximum speed, both the Skoda 109E and the Vectron comply with TSI high speed regulations. This is of great importance when you want to run on connections that include high speed rail sections of the ever growing high speed network in Europe.
When looking at older types, the ES 64 U2 (hkx, DB Fernverkehr, Hector Rail> Veolia) and ES 64 U4 (EuroCity's in HU/CZ/DE/AT/SI/CH and IT) can also still be an alternative, but not on networks including high speed networks.

[SE] Vectron receives homologation for Sweden
Vectron has now received its unlimited homologation for Sweden. Following Poland, Romania, Germany and Austria, this is the fifth national homologation in Europe. Previously Vectron had a temporary homologation in Sweden. The homologation process is also underway for further nations, including Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland.
Following succesfull winter testing in northern Sweden (Railcolor: with Vectron 193 923), e.g. on the Iron Ore Line to Kiruna, Vectron had received a temporary homologation for the swedish network. Afterwards the vehicle had been used in commercial service until October 2012 covering a mileage of more than 100,000 km. Effective April 30, 2013, the unlimited homologation has been granted.
After transfer from Sweden to Norway test and homologation runs were performed, followed by commercial service in freight operation on the Oslo-Bergen line with gradients of up to 22 ‰ . The homologation for Norway is expected within the next months. - Siemens

[DE/IT] Italy Vectron in the picture
Today, the first Vectron locomotive equipped for Italy, arrived at the entrance of test center Wegbweg-Wildenrath. - WS. First impressions:
Last weekend Eurotunnel and Siemens successfully tested the Vectron locomotive in the Channel Tunnel. The tests represent efforts on the part of Eurotunnel to develop cross-channel rail freight. The tests validated the compatibility of the locomotive with the systems and safety regulations applying to the Channel Tunnel. They were carried out with a Vectron AC locomotive in standard configuration where only the two pantographs had been replaced. The test runs confirmed that the Vectron can operate without any problems in the Channel Tunnel with its gradients of 11 per mille, pulling trains of 1,350 metric tons.
The Vectron locomotive entered the Tunnel through the French portal. This was followed by traction, braking and pantograph tests. The locomotive left emerged from the Tunnel in Folkestone in England before heading back to France for a second test phase. The goal of Eurotunnel is not to have to rely on special six-axle locomotives any more, but to use standard four-axle models to operate rail freight services between the Continent and Great Britain. Michel Boudoussier, Deputy Chief Executive of Groupe Eurotunnel SA, said: "The approval of new rolling stock is the necessary complement to the open access set up by Eurotunnel. I am pleased that our close cooperation with Siemens is paving the way for new international freight traffic, ensuring a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The tests mark Eurotunnel's contribution to the construction of the European railway network.“
"We are pleased to have succeeded in demonstrating the exceptional performance of the Vectron here, too. True to the Vectron slogan of "Creating corridors", we have been able to show that it is feasible to operate a standard vehicle safely and reliably in the Channel Tunnel", said Karl-Hermann Klausecker, CEO of the Siemens Business Unit Locomotives and Components.
The Vectron test runs last weekend proved that a standard locomotive conforming to the TSI guidelines can operate services through the Channel Tunnel safely and reliably without the need for any major modifications (apart from the installation of the TVM train protection system). - Siemens
Railcolor: Siemens' efforts to get the Vectron approved and homologated for many different countries and services slowly pay off. The Vectron is becoming the most widely accepted platform in Europe. It can run in the tunnel, complies with TSI High Speed regulations and in the mean time has approvals for Poland, Romania, Germany and Sweden.
Tonight, the Siemens Vectron will run through the Channel Tunnel. > Last night, Vectron 193 922 ran through the Channel Tunnel between Calais and Folkstone.

[DE] Vectron receives homologation for Germany
update 2013|01|07
[DE] Vectron receives homologation for Germany
On Dec 21, 2012, the German Federal Railway Authority granted the first homologation for a Vectron locomotive – the AC version with a rated power of 6.4 megawatts, designed for a top speed of 200 km/h. This version is the first from the Vectron platform to receive homologation.
A distinguishing feature of the Vectron platform is the compatibility of certain elements of other vehicle versions with the homologated locomotive. For an AC or multi-system locomotive, other customer-specific versions can be certified through a delta review based on the first prototype that has now been granted homologation. In order to qualify for national homologation, the Vectron required successful Europe-wide certification in compliance with the valid Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI). This EU certificate reduces the required extent of national
testing within EU states.
The Vectron's national homologation was performed within the framework of the cross-acceptance procedure, which is based on an agreement between Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. The task of confirming compliance was divided among the five national authorities. Thanks to this approach, cross acceptance certificates are now available which will be used for further homologations in the other countries. This parallel approach to homologation across the five countries makes optimum use of the time required for the processes in each country. Vectron locomotives have already received homologations for Poland, Sweden and Romania. - Siemens
Railcolor: This is a major breakthrough, both for Siemens and the locomotive market. Since a long time a homologated, modern multi purpose locomotive is available to the market again. Lease company Railpool is the first that can gain direct profit from this decision of EBA. Their six machines are for rent. Siemens Vectron locos used for test and promotion
Siemens must have been thinking. When you use your locomotives in pairs (like the 189s in ore traffic in the Netherlands), why not removing one cab and couple them together back to back? Or maybe an operator wants a single cab Vectron, just to have a more aerodynamic passenger train composition? With the high grade of modularity of the Vectron this is easy. Just replace a front cabine module by a closed module. How that might look? The images provide the answer.

[EU] INNOTRANS 2012: Vectron Last Mile – compact and (almost) ready to go
During the fair, Siemens showed its latest addition to the Vectron program, the AC Last Mile version. Former 193 922 (presented at InnoTrans 2010) got a Last Mile module with a 180kW diesel combustion engine. Siemens managed to put all additional equipment in just one package, so using only a minimal amount of space possible for the extra feature. Logically, also the Vectron DC can have a Last Mile feature.
The Siemens Vectron Last Mile is far ahead of competition, as the platform it belongs to has been trough most of the homologation processes in Europe now. The new TRAXX and the Gama still have to start dynamic testing. This will at least take 1-2 years.

[EU] INNOTRANS 2012: Vectron DC -ausgereift und zugelassen-
The Vectron DC is no prototype anymore. Today we inspected the Siemens 5 170 020, the Vectron 5.2MW locomotive for DC voltage systems, intensively tested in Poland. The machine was also present at Innotrans 2010, but as unit. 191 951.
In cabine one, Siemens has proudly placed the official document from the Polish UTK, which tells us that the Vectron is homologated officially, without any restrictions, for their country. The Vectron DC is officially approved for Poland since last Friday (14.09.2012). Also, Siemens does not want to call this specific machine a prototype anymore. Many of its components have been tested for millions of kilometers in other products. The 5 170 020 itself also completed 70.000 km already.
Let's start with some real Railcolor news. The picture shows the 'new' Vectron Last Mile locomotive: unit Siemens 192 961. But take a close look at its plough. Indeed, that is not new. Check the works number and bingo! This engine was also present at Innotrans 2010, as Siemens 193 922. The one with the flags.

[EU] Vectron: First locomotive platform in Europe to receive TSI Highspeed certification
Press statement by Siemens today:
The Vectron locomotive family has received its EC Certificate from Eisenbahn-CERT (EBC) in Bonn (Germany), the Notified Body for Interoperability of the Federal Railway Authority. This means that Vectron fulfills the requirements set out in the Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI) relating to rolling stock operating on the trans-European high-speed rail system (TSI HS RST), making it the first locomotive platform to be certified according to this specification in Europe. On the basis of this certificate, the Vectron can be approved for operation in all EU states. Additional evidence only has to be provided for compliance with applicable national requirements not covered by the TSI.
Ulrich Wiescholek, Head of EBC, said: "The EBC took the platform concept particularly
into account during the EC verification procedure. Each locomotive variant within the
‘Vectron family’ has the same basic configuration and – depending on the
locomotive's specific area of operation – is further equipped with individually
selected configuration packages. By establishing ‘verification modules’, which span a
range of parameters as large as possible and enable modular combinations,
ressources, time and costs associated with variant verification can be reduced. This
means that a new variant can usually be certified at a low cost and within a very
short space of time."
Vectron locomotives fulfill the TSI HS RST specification for class 2 vehicles operating
on the trans-European high-speed rail system (vehicles with a maximum speed from
190 km/h to 250 km/h) as well as the TSI SRT (Safety in Railway Tunnels), which
covers large parts of national fire protection requirements in Europe. In addition, the
Vectron complies with TSI PRM (Accessibility to Persons with Reduced Mobility) and
the noise level requirements set out in TSI HS RST as well as in the specification for
the trans-European conventional rail system TSI NOISE.
There will be an official certificate presentation ceremony during InnoTrans 2012, on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 2:15 p.m. Location: Siemens outdoor exhibition area, Track 2/20 - Vectron ACSiemens Vectron locos used for test and promotion

[EU] Adria Transport buys the very last EuroRunner
The very last EuroRunner diesel-electric locomotive is sold: Adria Transport from Slovenia has purchased its second ER20 unit. It already operates one machine with service number 2016 920 since last year. - Siemens
In the past weeks, there was a small run on the very last stock units that Siemens built in 2011. Stern&Hafferl got two, and Metrans three machines, leaving only one white machine (Siemens 21690 / Siemens Vorratslok no.65) for sale.
In total, Siemens has produced 181 units of this locomotive type, of which the majority (100) is property of the Austrian state railways. Now it has to make room for its successor: the Vectron DE. From the Siemens press statement:
The successor of the highly popular Eurorunner ER20 is the Vectron DE. The vehicle
concept is a consistent, further development of the Eurorunner, utilizing the
maximum number of meaningful synergies with the electric variants of the Vectron.
The Vectron leverages the operating and project experience gained from over 1,600
Eurosprinters and Eurorunners. Market demands, customer feedback and customer
interviews have been channeled into its development along with the new normative
requirements (e.g. with regard to crashworthiness and reduced emissions) and the
sensitivity analyses of technical parameters and solutions. In addition, a number of
improvements have been deliberately implemented in the Vectron DE. Compared to
the ER20, various performance parameters, such as the diesel engine power rating
and the performance and braking power of the electric brake, have also been
improved. In times of ever increasing fuel costs, special priority has been attached to
low fuel consumption.Adria Transport 2016Siemens Vectron locos used for test and promotion

[DE] Railcolor Report: open door day in Wegberg-Wildenrath
On 01.07.2012, Siemens invited everyone to come and take a look at its Wegberg-Wildenrath test center. Visitors could run the T2 and T3 test oval with Schienenbusse and a Belgian Desiro-ML. There was a world attempt with BRIO-tracks. Girls were extracting DNA from unions etc etc. There were many Siemens trains standing around. Some open for public, others hidden in the background. We wouldn't be surprized of all 15 Velaro-D trainsets were present. The same for many Desiro-ML trainsets (for example 08521, 08523) and locomotives for Belgium. Trams were being repaired after heavy crashes, locomotives were refitted with ETCS. Much to see. A big thanks to Siemens to give us this opportunity. Our report of the day:
EuroSprinter for sale! (black vs. white)
For anyone still interested: Siemens still has three 189 series locomotives for sale: E 189 845, 822 and 823. All three were present during the day, parked next to a black one: ES 64 F4-995.
PCW Thunderbirds are go!
In Wegberg, Siemens has several locomotives used for shunting. The have PCW numbers. PCW 6 is a red Vossloh G800BB, PCW 7 is the EuroRunner and the EuroSprinter godfather is now PCW 8. The question however still remains, will PCW 8 ever run again? For two years now, the machine is parked in Wegberg, have some sort of damage... PCW 7 presented itself in two different sizes. However, the model was a silver scale locomotive, with small inkjet-printed paper logos and graphics.
Everybody Vectron!
A long waiting queue was there all day. Everybody wanted to climb into Vectron 193 922, parked outside. We did not go in, but made some nice close-ups of the exterior and some impressions. Again a tip for everyone looking for works numbers (193 924 = SMP 21697) of Siemens locomotives: go to cab no.1, check the frame right above the right buffer. Good luck!
Hide and seek
Some locomotives did not like all the attention. One had to know what to look for to find them. All in the back of the halls we could see 193 901 (the only Vectron now with the old, Belgian front bow) and Rail One's 474 102. Hidden in the bush outside, two Traxx locomotives were spotted; 186 121 (edit) in Fyra-colors and IGT 246 011 still celebrating German's 150th railways anniversary. Behind ES 64 F4-453 we could identify ES 64 F4-409 and Nordcargo 474 201. - DvdR
SNCB 19 vs Vectron and the auto-coupler
Around fifteen HLE 19 series locomotives were seen in Wegberg. The 1909, 1906 and 1913 were in front of the public. We took the opportunity to make some good close-ups of 1906 and its Schwab-coupler system, that what makes the HLE19 different from its normal HLE18 sisters. Also note the special steel, futuristic construction behind it.

[EU] Innotrans 2012: Siemens presents the Vectron Last Mile / Mono Cab
This Vectron news is part of a Siemens pre-Innotrans press package. All information can be found on this dedicated website.
Customer requirements make locomotive manufacturers creative. With new orders they can extend their product portfolio and implement new sub version to what is already available.
Siemens however subscribes the versatility of its Vectron platform by presenting alternative and creative configurations by itself. In 2010, the Vectron-quartet was the surprise of the fair. DC, AC, MS and even a diesel-electric locomotive was presented, all built with the same building blocks and modules.
Vectron Last-Mile
Innotrans 2012 will be about extending the range, partly in practice, partly in theory. At the fair, a Vectron locomotive with additional diesel-generator will be presented. The generator will be an extra module available to all AC and DC versions of the Vectron. One can look at it is a direct response to Bombardier and its TRAXX AC3 locomotive with 'Last Mile' equipment. A useful, hybrid solution for smaller operators, with small fleets, that don't want to be dependent on the availability of a local diesel locomotive, which is not under their control.
However, Bombardier decided to implement it in a whole new base version of the TRAXX platform, and it is not known of the 'Last Mile' feature can be implemented in a TRAXX AC2 (185.2 seires) or a TRAXX DC (483 series) locomotive. In the past two years, the Vectron has been tested and homologated extensively. First approvals are through (RO) or almost completed (SE,DE,AT). The first new TRAXX still has not left its safe-haven in Kassel, more than a year after its presentation, so still has to go trough all the testing. Siemens can strike back here, if they manage to get new orders. Because that is the big question with the Siemens Vectron; who will buy it. Of course, it has been developed for the longer run, but Siemens has invested a large sum of money that it wants to earn back. They won't be able to do that with six units for Railpool and two for FuoriMuro.
However, new, bigger orders are expected. In Europe, the state railways of Finland and DB Schenker in Poland want to modernize their fleet for example. And don't forget that the know-how of the Vectron will also be used for the Cities-Sprinter project for Amtrak.
Vectron Mono Cab We don't expect a prototype of this one, but yes, it is possible of course to built a Vectron with only one full-fledged cab. A cab is a module on its own and can easily be replaced with something less complicated (the „Heck-End“ is born). And Siemens has done it before, with the diesel-locomotive for Iran. One such unit could be in passenger services. Two units, coupled back to back, can serve as double-locomotive for heavy freight duty.
But ideas are nice and evident, but both configurations are not very common in Europe. Passenger operators only decide to order such a locomotive if their fleet composition leaves them no other option. Train sets are going for the win here.
Double-locomotives are required for long-run, heavy freight trains, and are therefore a more common site in vast countries like Russia and China. But globalization continues. A double-Vectron for Belarus or Brazil maybe?

[EU] Siemens Vectron: first unlimited homologation
Quite an extensive update from Siemens, about the progression of all Vectron homologation projects. First the big news, the first unlimited homologation is there. The Vectron is now fully approved for... Romania! A country, interesting for customers of the Vectron AC locomotive.
Homologation runs have already been completed for Germany, as have the network access runs for Austria. The homologation process for Switzerland, Italy and The Netherlands is also underway. - Siemens
Furthermore, preliminary homologation has already been issued in Poland and Sweden. In Poland, Vectron DC 191 951 and 952 are being tested extensively in both revenue passenger and freight services. In Sweden, Vectron AC 193 krupp_2884_02 is used for trials. Operators such as Rush Rail are fond of the new locomotive.
In Poland, it was able to pull a coal train weighing roughly 3,800 metric tons up a six percent gradient between Zawiercie and Warsaw without any problems. In a further test with 4,000 metric tons on level track, it reached a speed of 15 kilometers per hour after just 200 meters. The tests were carried out with Vectron DC 193 951, which has a service weight of 80 metric tons and tractive power rating of 5,200 kW. The locomotive is currently in service at DB Schenker Rail Poland under supervised operation as part of homologation activities.
In Poland, it was able to pull a coal train weighing roughly 3,800 metric tons up a six promille gradient between Zawiercie and Warsaw without any problems.
Its sister locomotive, 193 952, is also being used for the same purpose by PKP IC in intercity service between Warsaw and Kraków with a top speed of 160 km/h. The route is operated twice daily, covering a total distance of 1,250 km.
In Sweden, a freight train weighing roughly 2,300 metric tons was hauled up a six kilometer long 10‰ gradient. Vectron AC locomotive 193 krupp_2884_02, which has a tractive power rating of 6,400 kW, developed a constant speed of 40 km/h over the entire incline without the need for sanding. Preliminary homologation was issued for the Swedish network after the locomotive successfully completed testing under winter conditions in northern Sweden. The locomotive is currently in service on the route between Gothenburg and Sundsvall via Västerås. - Siemons

[PL] Siemens Vectron now in operation in Poland [updated]
Siemens just published this press statement:
New locomotive approved: Siemens Vectron now in operation in Poland
The Siemens Vectron DC is now transporting freight and passengers in Poland. The authority granted approval in November 2011.
Trial operation agreed with three railway companies
Siemens received the preliminary approval for DC locomotives from the Vectron family in Poland. It Must now prove its worth in the Polish winter. In November 2011 the Polish approval authority Urząd Transportu Kolejowego (UTK) granted Siemens preliminary approval for the DC variant of the Vectron locomotive. The two locomotives with the serial numbers 5 170 020 and 5 170 021 are equipped with the SHP Polish train control system and have been in operation on test trips in Poland since 2011, e.g. in the testing area near Żmigród. In the coming months they must prove their reliability in freight and passenger transportation in order to obtain permanent approval for operation on Polish rails. To this end Siemens is working together with three Polish railway companies. The handover of the first vehicle (020) to the first operator – the DB Schenker Rail Polska railway company – took place last Friday. Further partners will include ITL Polska and PKP Intercity.
About the Vectron DC
The DC variant of the Vectron is designed for a three kilovolt system and is thus suitable for networks e.g. in Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic – provided that the corresponding train control systems have been installed. The locomotive has a maximum power of 5,200 kilowatts and a tractive effort on starting of 300 kilonewtons at a weight of 80 tons. During trial operation in Poland it will run at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour.
The Siemens Vectron family celebrated its world premiere at the InnoTrans International Trade Fair for Transport Technology in Berlin in September 2010. Three months later the Munich-based locomotive rental company Railpool purchased the first six vehicles.

Some nice impressions of multi-system Vectron 193 902 'Werner von Siemens' during test at the main ring of Wegberg-Wildenrath. SNCB 1816 was there to assist. - WS
In the past months, Vectron-AC 193 921 completed various dynamic trials in and around the Alpes, in Germany, Switserland and Austria. This resulted in some nice combinations. It seems that only red and creme/wit locomotives are allowed to haul the test train. In August we saw the 193 921 behind golden oldie 103 222. In the second week of September, the 921 was hauled by 'Swiss Express' Re4/4 11109, for trials between Biasca and Airolo. At this moment the convoy is in Austria, where two 1014 series locomotives help out. - OW/MS/CT

[EU] Siemens Vectron: again a surprise

[EU] Siemens Vectron: again a surprise
Siemens tricked us in Wegberg-Wildenrath last June. They did not tell the complete story. Indeed, the Vectron platform will be Siemens' new platform to compete with Bombardier's Traxx and the Alstom PrimaII, but the range is a bit more versatile than expected. At Innotrans 2010 the Vectron DE will make its debute, alongside the new DC-only version and accompagnied by the known AC and MS version. All four units at the Innotrans are new, so Siemens invested in building in at least six white prototypes. Unlike the 193 901 and 921 that we already knew, the four newcomers have an altered front-hatch design and new lamp-fittings. Some first details about the four new units:
Vectron MS - 193 902 - Another multi-system unit to be used accross Europe, it's decorated with red front markings for Italy. It will be named next wednesday as 'Werner von Siemens'.
Vectron AC - 193 922 - The second AC-machine for services in Germany and towards Eastern Europe.
Vectron DC - 191 951 - A new one, for DC (3 kV) only. Its UIC ratser tells us that Siemens aims at the Polish domestic market first. On one side, the DC unit has automatic couplings, to show this feature.
Vectron DE - 247 901 - The unexpected surprise, a diesel Vectron. A machine with a 2400kW MTU engine. It has features for passenger services, as there is a display up front for example.
The first dynamic test runs on public tracks with a Siemens Vectron locomotive have started. With a test train of FTZ Minden, AC-unit 193 921 is making its first meters on the German network.
Unit 193 921 is configurated for services on AC-networks only, and has to compete with the Traxx AC2 (185.2 series) built by Bombardier. The UIC raster of the 921 gives us an example of what Siemens thinks is an important service domain fur such a locomotive: the Germany-Austraia-Hungary-Romania-Slovakia corridor.
We also get a lot of questions whether or not the Belgian 18 series locomotives are related to the Vectron. Of course, both units are built by Siemens and because the Vectron is fitted with a similar looking cab-module, it's logical to think they have many things in common. Nevertheless, Siemens emphasizes that the Belgian units are derived from the EuroSprinter ES64U4 concept, and that the Vectron platform is completely revised. The keyword of the Vectron is flexibility, which has replaced the old adagium of the EuroSprinter: multifunctionality.

[EU] Siemens Vectron revealed
Today was an important day for Siemens: today they officially presented the new Vectron platform on the Innotrans Pre-Press Conference in Dusseldorf and Wegberg-Wildenrath, Germany. The Vectron will redefine and widen the Siemens product portfolio for electric locomotives.
Today, two Vectron units were present at Wegberg-Wildenrath. One was making its rounds on the main ring; 193 901, a multi-system high power (6,4 MW) version with a top speed of 200 kph. In the workshops a second unit was available to the always curious press people; 193 921 a 200 kph high-power Vectron for AC voltage systems only, to be certified for Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slowakia and Romania. A third and fourth prototype will be built to get the certification process in the highest gear.
During the previous weekend, Siemens Mobility held a press event, during which many journalists were invited to, amonst other locations, take a look inside the Munich factories. Next to numerous units under construction for Queensland Rail and National Pacific, new machines for the Belgian Railways (18 series) and several new ES 64 F4s could be seen, to be delivered to MRCE Dispolok. After the new VI (IT/PL), VO (NL/DE/PL) and VK (DE/NL) configurated machines, now the first units that represent the VP (PL/IT) and VL (NL/BE/DE/CH/IT) sub versions will be built.
Remarkable is also the announcement that Siemens is soon to introduce a new standard platform for locomotives. Herewith, the Belgian 18 series, Portuguese LE4700 series and the ER20s for Lithuania now prove to be just an interim solution. - Siemens
MRCE ES64F4Siemens Vectron locos used for test and promotion
After a general presentation in Dusseldorf, Siemens invited the press to visit its Wegberg-Wildenrath test center for a first direct confrontation with the new Vectron. Inside, the white painted Vectron prototype no.2 was parked, accompanied by MRCE-Dispolok ES 64 P-001 and three Siemens demonstrators: Siemens ER 20-2007, Siemens E 189 840 and 183 701. Also, all main pillars of the current Siemens' locomotive program (all in a common white and silver livery) were available to the press and, one day later, also for potential customers. The Vectron got all the attention, but of course, with some serious homologation, certification and fine-tuning processes ahead, the current EuroSprinter and EuroRunner platforms still have to push the sales numbers for the upcoming time. The presence of the ES 64 P-001 'Werner von Siemens' was more or less symbolical.
On presentation day, many different, interesting locomotives and trainsets were present at the Wegberg test center. Several Desiro-UK train sets for First ScotRail, several Desiro-ML sets for the Belgian railways; 189 series locomotives for DB Schenker, ES 64 F4s, old and new for MRCE Dispolok, some Spinter train sets for the Dutch railways. An IranRunner was hidden in between the stacked ES 64 F4. Although many class 18 locomotives for the Belgian railways were transported away from Wegberg in the weeks before the presentation day, still some 15 units were standing around in Wegberg.
Siemens Vectron: Innotrans 2010
From 21.09.2010 to 26.09.2010, the international Trade Fair Innotrans 2010 was held in Berlin. During this event the Vectron made its real debute. Soon it was clear that Siemens did not tell us the complete story during the Wegberg-Wildenrath press and customer day, two three months before... There was still more to come... Three days bfore the fair was officially openend, the Vectron-armada arrived in Berlin. As promised in Wegberg, four units would represent the new platform, but some things were strange. Why were all fronts covered with psychedelic plastic? One unit did not have pantographs, and, the two units we alreay knew, 193 901 and 921, were not part of the group...
surprise no.1: new front design
When the tape came of, redesigned front hatches and lamp fittings were revealed. Siemens did put some extra effort in giving the new platform a little more an identity of its own. The headlights are now placed into silver painted light houses, the front hatch now has a serious grill, with 8 openings, reminding us a bit about Scania trucks. The frame ends also changed. From now on we know exaclty if we are dealing with a Vectron or not, as the name is perforated in the frame end above every right buffer.
surprise no.2: the Vectron Diesel
In Wegberg, Siemens did say that a diesel-electric version of the Vectron would be possible, but that this was something for the distant future... But the future was near! At Innotrans 2010 Siemens presented to Vectron-DE, unit no. 247 901, as a surprise for all customers and competitors. Its body is approximately 1 meter longer that the electric version, but the overal design is very similar. The Vectron-DE can be delivered with power outputs ranging from 2000 to 2400 kW. The unit at the fair had a MTU 16V 4000 R84 engine, rated at 2 400 kW. With this engine, the Vectron-DE meets Euro Stage IIIB emissions regulations.
The Vectron-DE is available for both freight and passenger services. The 247 901 at the fair more or less had the passenger-configuration, with destination displays integrated in both front hatches.
surprise no.3: another 4 prototypes!
With the four new Innotrans-prototypes, Siemens had six locomotives at its disposal for testing and homologation projects. Two Multi-System units to run accross Europe (193 901 and 902), two units for alternating current voltage systems, important for corridors towards Scandinavia and Eastern Europe (193 921 and 922), one machine for the Polish and Italian domestic markets (191 951) and diesel-Vectron.
The ambitions of Siemens are very clear, they will no longer watch from the sideline, to see Bombardier getting awarded with all important orders, as happened in the past decade. With the Vectron, Siemens has the exact same four base configurations as Bombardiers has developed for its Traxx family, MS, AC, DC and DE.
