Stock locomotives type ES 64 U4 |
|
Since 2008, the workshops of Linz had several ES 64 U4 locomotives in stock, making it possible for Siemens to react quickly on customers with small orders. We consider #21314 being the first one built according to this strategy. Up to numbr #21320 this worked all fine, but then the economical crisis set in and several machines were completed, made thier maiden run, but had to be stored, waiting for better times. The following six units completed their maiden run in March and April 2009 (works numbers #21321, #21322, #21323, #21604, #21605, #21606 as far as we know) with a temporary service number (always 1216 999) and in their base coating. They were then stored in Linz.
During 2009 and 2010 another six locomotives were assembled in Linz without having a direct customer yet. All these units were sold gradually in 2010 and 2011 to operators, such as RTS, WLC and CargoServ from Austria and InRail and FUC from Italy.
In 2011 Siemens built yet another batch of U4-locomotives in Munich, starting with the white 183 712 and 713. |

The last one standing: Until next year, Siemens locomotive 183 717 is being used for ETCS tests for Siemens itself. After this, it will be handed over to the Steiermarkbahn, who has purchased this locomotive. Now it is promoting Siemens Trainguard with big blue stickers. - Siemens

There are three EuroSprinter locomotives left, that are still property of Siemens: 183 717 and 189 822 and 823. But not being sold, does not mean these machines are not being used. These recent images show 183 717 in a CargoServ train. Both 189 822 and 823 are being hired to operators that have recently ordered new Siemens locomotives. 189 822 will be replacaed by 183 717 in 2015 in the fleet of Austrian operator Steiermarkbahn. 189 823 is now in service of Italian operator CFI, that will get tewo Vectron locomotives in the second half of 2014.

In 2013, Italian operator FuoriMuro will recieve two new Vectron locomotives for its freight services. Up till then two Siemens stock locomotives (type ES64U4) will be available for starting up. Both units will be hired by Siemens to InRail, which has a common shareholder with FuoriMuro and all running permits of course.
The new InRail locomotives are:

Siemens 21679 - FuoriMuro 190 314

The work shops of Linz may have completed their last ES64U4-locomotives; However this does not mean the U4-production has ended. New units now come directly from Munich. Again, stock units are being built of this type. First ones to leave the factory are Siemens 21670 - Siemens 183 712 and Siemens 21671 - Siemens 183 713. Both are painted white with red doors and are configurated as a B-type. Today they were first seen in Vienna on 03.12.2011. - RB/EBFO
Remember that also Compagnia Ferroviaria Italiana still awaits the delivery of two U4-units coming from Munich.
Update: on 06.12.2011, both engines were used for test runs (in proper German: Rollwiderstandskräfte bei Weichendurchfahrten) around Klein Schwechat in Austria. - EBFO/RW

The 183 701 and its train of ideas have left Hamburg and since 26.04.2011 it's in Copenhagen, Denmark. If you want to know more, it has its own website: http://www.train-of-ideas.net.
Railcolor comment: As 183 701 is only approved for running in Germany and Austria, it did not bring the train to Denmark of course. The locomotive drove to Würzburg on April, 22th. A 185 series locomotive from Schenker Rail brought the Train of Ideas to Denmark. - TB

Hamburg is the Green Capital of Europe 2011. It wants to provide an Europe-wide platform for taking on the big environmental questions of our time. One of the instruments of this plan is the Train of Ideas.
The train will visit 18 cities, including Warsaw, Malmö, Copenhagen, Brussels, Vienna, Barcelona and Marseille. It will exhibition themes surrounding urban development and living, mobility, energy and climate protection, nature and city greenery, resource protection, economy and consumption.
Although the initial visuals show a Vectron ahead of the green train, it will be Siemens 183 701 that will start with it from Hamburg.

Vlaky.net has a nice report about the vehicles currently making their test rounds at the test tracks of Cerhenice (there was an open day at the 8th of May). IranRunner 1502 is there (No. 1503 is in Wegberg by the way), together with MRCE Dispolok ES 64 F4-111. Several Skoda units were spotted. New to us is a new ES 64 U4 locomotive: a red painted machine with number 183 702 (see picture). Production number of this machine is still unknown... did anyone check? For now we list it as Siemens 21323. - JP/NJ

That the OBB workshops in Linz are not delivering new locomotives to rail operators at this moment, does not mean that none are being built. In March and April six different ES 64 U4-units were released from work for a maiden run. None of them completely painted, all of them decorated with a temporary service number: 1216 999. As far as we know all these machines are still stored in Linz at this moment. As they carried a Linz-production number (1216/68 - 1216/72) during their maiden run, we know that it was a different machine every time a 1216 999 passed. If anyone has a picture of one of these machines during its maiden run, it would be very welcome. - EBFO

Siemens is making it harder every day to find out for who they are building locomotives. On 02.03.2009, the OBB works in Linz sended out a machine that is not even painted yet. Decorated with provisional number 1216.999-4, the machine is painted in skin coloured primer; only lamp fittings, doors and grids were red, the energy absorbing elements up front were dark grey. Time will tell us who will get this machine, fact is that Siemens still has to built twelve such electrics for the Slovenian Railways (SZ) and that the painted parts of 999 fit the red livery the SZ is using. - EBFO
