close-up: 7100 series for National Pacific, Australia
On 16.02.2009, the roll-out took place of the 7100 series electric for Pacific National. Late 2007, this large rail operator from down-under ordered 23 single-cab Class 7100 electric freight locomotives by Siemens. They are all built in the Siemens factories in Munich and shipped form Germany to Australia.
Weighing 132 metric tons, the Class 7100 electric freight locomotive is a six-axle vehicle with a power rating of 4,000 kW and a maximum speed of 80 km/h. It will be operating on the narrow Australian track gauge of 1,067 millimeters. Pacific National uses the powerful locomotive for coal transport in Queensland.
Two extra batches (+9+10) were ordered later on, making a total of 42 units in service of Pacific National.

[AU] PN 7100 series: more information on the third batch
To be honest, we only found out this week, that Siemens is building a third batch of electrics for Australian operator Pacific National. The transport of 7135 and 7136 gave us the hint.
Now we have a bit more information about the latest delivery. This year, ten more locomotives will be built, with service number 7133-7142. The PN 7100 series list has just been updated, showing you that the new machines have Siemens works number 21847-21855 and 21866. - Siemens

[DE] PN 7100 series (3rd batch) river transport [Edit]
Pure luck on the morning of 12.03.2013 Holger Beckedorf drove westbound on the B401 and saw from the corner of its eyes something yellowish with light on board of a vessel passing by. Take the exit, turn around and wait on the next bridge.
On board of the ship are locomotive no.7135 and 7136, both on their way to Australia. There they will run for Pacific National. [Edit] They are part of a third batch of this type, including ten extra machines. In total Pacific National will have 42 units when this batch is completed. - HB

[AU] nine extra units for Pacific National
In Australia, Pacific National, the country's largest private rail operator, has ordered nine additional freight locomotives for coal transport in Queensland. The locomotives for Pacific National will be manufactured at the Siemens plant in Munich; In 2007, Pacific National ordered its first 23 Class 7100 locomotives. The decisive advantage of this type of locomotive is low maintenance costs along with reduced power consumption compared to previous models. During their trip from the mine to the port (approx. 380 km), the new locomotives can save up to 4,500 kWh by feeding braking energy back into the power network. This corresponds to the annual power consumption of a 4 person household. - Siemens

[DE/AU] Pacific National locos; ice and ice cold
Due to the very severe weather-conditions in Germany, a freight ship transporting Siemens units 7119 and 7120 (for Pacific National from Australia) got frozen in at the Mittellandkanal. It is really weird to see see these exotic locomotives built for the warm and dusty outback, surrounded by ice. - KAR

[AU] Siemens and Australia
Although no direct member of the Siemens EuroSprinter-family and therefore not represented on this website, still good to know:
In July 2008, the first Siemens electric type 3800, set foot in Australia. Since then the Germans are delivering 20 such machines to Queensland Rail, ordered in April 2006. In October 2007, 25 additional machines were ordered, of which delivery will start at the end of 2009.
This month the roll-out took place of the first electric for another (private) operator from down-under. Pacific National, the largest private railway company in Australia, will soon be able to take delivery of the first of 23 Class 7100 electric freight locomotives. The locomotive rolled out of the Munich-Allach plant on February 16 and is due to arrive in Brisbane, Australia, at the beginning of April. It will then continue on its journey to the coal mines in Queensland. The other 22 locomotives will be delivered over the next 12 months. They are currently being built in the Siemens plant in Munich-Allach, Germany.
Weighing 132 metric tons, the Class 7100 electric freight locomotive is a six-axle vehicle with a power rating of 4,000 kW and a maximum speed of 80 km/h. It will be operating on the narrow Australian track gauge of 1,067 millimeters. Pacific National wants to use the powerful locomotive for coal transport in Queensland. Its efficient traction and regenerative brake systems ensure lower energy consumption and a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions.- Siemens
When there are railway fans from Australia, which would like to contribute pictures or information about these machines, please let us know. Maybe we can make a picture-gallery about these machines.
