Szent Márton (or Saint Martin) is celebrating his 1700th birthday. This year his jubilee is chosen as theme for a Werbelok of the Hungarian railways (MAV). Unit 480 006 is the chosen one to be pimped this year and we are sure this machine will soon haul a pilgrim train to Romania, a yearly tradition. Yes, there they are again! The Szekely Gyors pilgrim trains to Transsylvania in Romania. This year was the recently redecorated MAV 480 007 star of the show.
Another historic figure from Hungary just got its own promo locomotive. MAV 480 007 is now covered in a special wrapping about Hungarian nobleman: II. Rákóczi Ferenc (or Francis Rákóczi the 2nd) . He was the leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs in 1703-1711, so is stated on wikipedia.

Both MAV 480 004 and 005 have completed their Catholic pilgrimage to Şumuleu Ciuc (or Csíksomlyó) in Romania. Hungarians go there every year to commemorate a victory of the Catholics over the Protestants dating back to 1567, a happening believed to be a sign of Vrigin Mary. Nowadays it is also an event for Hungarian people living in and outside the historical region of Transylvania to demonstrating their spiritual unity. - PP

This early morning, two pilgrim trains departed from Budapest. Locomotive 480 005 left at 4.30 am with the "Össznemzeti Székely Gyors-Csíksomlyó Expressz". At 5.43 the second one, pulled by 480 004, left. This one is called "Történelmi Székely Gyors". Some first impressions form the journey.
Yesterday already, a MÁV Nosztalgia Kft a charter train (the "Boldogasszony Zarándokvonat") left for the same purpose. - PH/ZM
During the inauguration of the MAV 480 004 in its new Gábor Áron outfit, we saw a small cannon next to the locomotive. This particular type was made of copper by Gábor Áron. That's why the official nickname of the 480 004 is the "Copper-cannon" or "Rézágyú" in Hungarian. BTW: There also a very known is a folk song about this type of cannon. - PP

The 5th and the newest "Werbelok" in Hungary is MÁV-START 480 004. This locomotive commemorates the 200th Birthday of Gábor Áron, the famous national hero during the revolution and independence war in 1848-1849. The livery was designed by István Zachar and was chosen during a contest.
The locomotive was presented today in Budapest-Nyugati. Afterwards it went out for its revenue service in this livery: IC 1565 "Kócsag" from Budapest-Nyugati to Nyíregyháza.
This locomotive will soon pull the pilgrimage train "Történelmi Székely Gyors" from Budapest to Csíkszereda/Miercurea Ciuc in Romania. Interesting: from Debrecen to Cluj Napoca it will run together with a Hungarian and a Romanian diesel locomotive, because this section is not electrified. - PH
Per 01.01.2014, the Hungarian railways (MÁV) have re-alligned the responsibilities within its organization. MÁV Start is the new name of the division responsible for passenger services and maintenance of rolling stock used for these services. Amongst other types, the MÁV 480 series locomotives therefore get new Start-markings.

Not many machines will get so much attention as the Csíksomlyó express locomotive.

According to the news on the hunyadimozdony.hu the newest 'Werbelok' in Hungary will be MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Traxx locomotive 480 005. The design is a result of a competition, organised by the MÁV-TRAKCIÓ. The locomotive will haul the pentacostal pilgrimage train to Csíkszereda/Miercurea Ciuc (Romania).

The time table change of today, also meant the introduction of the MAV 480 series in revenue services in and to Romania. This is part of a bilateral agreement between the railways of Hungary and Romania. The contract covers:

The option for an addiional 25 locomotives will not be exercised. The second picture shows both engines behind 470 001 after their arrival in Ferencváros on 02.02.2012.

Today and yesterday, the The Railway Days 2011 – or Wider Black Sea Area Railway Summit - takes place in Bucharest (RO). Part of this event is an exhibition of railway vehicles, most of them (re)built/renovated/refurbished by Romanian companies. The video gives a good impression of the various projects.
In the mean time we get some first images of this years exhibition. Interesting combination on display are the Transmontana locomotive (480 001) of Softronic, nowadays in service of the Romanian railways, and the MAV 480 002 (see also 8.32 min in the movie). The latter one will soon start homologation trials in Romania.
On 01.09.2011, Bombardier delivered the 480 009 and 010 to the Hungarian railways - Line up of locomotives of Polish operator LOTOS Kolej - Railpool 481 001 and 002 now both run for BoxXpress.de - It is trying to hide it, but for sure, Akiem's BB 37025 has a new all silver livery.

Four days ago, the Traxx for the Hungarian state railways, MÁV, left the Bombardier factory in Kassel. It was transported to Hungary. Today, unit 480 001 was officially presented and on display, just in front of the former Royal Waiting Room at Budapest-Nyugati station.
Both MÁV and Bombardier representatives held their speeches, and there was the possibility to take a look inside. In the cab: there is no EBuLa installed, but the indicators of the Hungarian safety system EVM had been integrated to the MFA. Remarkable: the MÁV-Traxx has a high-speed hand washing facility. - KB/CK/MF/PH

Today MAV Traxx unit no. 001 completed its maiden run. Remember we're talking about a Traxx P160AC2 configuration here, clearly proven by its topspeed of 160 kph. Note that the MAV version of the DB Regio 146.2 series has no destination display above its front windows.. - CK/AH/SC

Today, Bombardier confirmed the MÁV Traxx order. As we already wrote a lot about these machines, only the final details:
product: Traxx P160 AC locomotives, also for 160 kph.
number: 25, plus 25 as option
order value: 80 million euro ($112 million US)
delivery start: spring 2011
service domain: passenger service in Hungary + cross-border transport to Austria and Germany
The MÁV units most likely represent the latest Traxx platform (We call it Traxx 2E) which up till now has no members for AC voltage systems only. > correction: the MAV units will be normal P160 AC2 units.
Missed it last month, but is there! The agreement: MAV-Trakcio, state-owned Hungarian railway company MAV's traction unit, on December 3 signed for a EUR 79.6 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Germany's KfW IPEX Bank to pay for 25 Bombardier engines.
KfW IPEX is providing 52 pct of the loan and the EIB 48 pct. The first repayment of the 15-year loan is due in June 2013.
MAV-Trakcio will take delivery of the first Bombardier Traxx engine in the first half of 2011 or as early as December 2010. The remaining engines will arrive within two years. The engines will represent the P160 configuration of the Traxx platform, but it's unknown if this will be the AC2 version (similar to DB's 146.2 series) or the AC2E version, still to be developed. source: http://investhungary.com

This source informs us about the current status of the order of the Hungarian Railways (MÁV) for 25 Traxx P160AC2 electrics. MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Zrt. got permission from its mother company to go on with its financial plan. It is expected that in December 2009, MÁV-TRAKCIÓ will sign a contract, worth 79,6 million Euro (21,5 billion Florint). 48% will be financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the remaining 52% will be the responsibility of the Kfw bank. Autumn 2010, then the Hungarian state railways (MAV) hope to recieve their first Bombardier Traxx electrics, according to this source. Negotiations with banks financing the order of initially 25 Traxx AC2 units are on their way. A deal with the European Investment bank has been made, the deal with KfW bank is expected to be closed by the end of August. The Hungarian state railways (MAV) announces its latest purchase on its website. ; An order for 25 electrics Traxx P160 AC2s for mixed services, costing around 3,09 million Euro each. An option for another 25 machines is included.
"The contract for the delivery of 25 state-of-the-art dual-frequency electric locomotives Type Traxx with 25 more on option was ceremonially signed in the Royal Lounge of Budapest Nyugati station by Ake Wennberg president (Locomotives and Equipment), Peter Ammann vice-president (Sales and Marketing Locomotives), Pierre Maillan director (Sales Locomotives) on behalf of Bombardier Transporation and by István Heinzinger, CEO of MÁV Zrt. László György Zsákay, CEO of MÁV Trakció Railway Traction Zrt., the future operator of the locomotives was also participating the ceremony.
The new locomotives will replace partly the Series V43 locomotives in current operation. The the obsolete Series V43 is well riped for replacement as the main parameters are not meeting the up-to-date requirements any more.
The basic expectations against the new locomotives are the dual frequency operation, with a haulage capacity of 2000 tons with 120 km/h respectively 160 km/h speed. The higher speed (140-160 km/h) is required specificly for the passenger train operation both in the international and domestic traffic. (This expectation is met now by the locomotives Taurus and series V63 of MÁV Trakció Zrt. only)
The Public Procurement Procedure for the purchase of the new locomotives was initiated in early September 2007 by MÁV. In the two-stage tendering procedure the result of the first participation stage was announced on November 12, 2007 and consequently Bombardier Transporatrion GmbH was requested to submit an offer. Submission date of the offer was December 19, 2007, this was followed by the contracting and price negotiations with the manufacturer. After the endorsement of the founder of MÁV Zrt. (Ministry of Transports, Telecommunication and Energy Matters) issued in September 2008, the official result of the Public Procurement Procedure was announced on November 17, 2008.
MÁV Zrt. is buying the first 25 locomotives against 3.094.000 EUR unit price from Bombardier Transportation. Delivery deadline is 2 years from the time of signing the financing contract.
The price of the locomotives will be covered by means-financing credit line, the financing partner will be selected in the frame of a separate Public Procurement Procedure by MÁV Zrt and MÁV-Trakció Zrt." - MAV

The picture shows the brand new 185 609, the third Traxx locomotive for ATC, which will be homologated for Germany, Austria and Hungary. For this third country they need to be equipped with the EVM120 signalling system. This equipment is built in at the Bombardier workshops in Dunakeszi in Hungary. 185 607 (27.07.2008) and 185 608 (14.09.2008, retrofitting in progress) already made this trip. Note that the 609 has small service numbers up front, and in the back one can see 481 002 for Eurocom.

On June 17, 2008, the MAV Supervisory Committee approved the acquisition of 25 Bombardier Traxx multi-functional locomotives. The tender for the supply of 25 electrical units, with an option for another 25 units, was launched in 2007. The traction vehicles are adjusted to 25kV AC and 15kV AC, as well as 3kV DC.
MAV planned to sign the contract with the Canadian manufacturer in March 2008, but after the rulling coalition that proposed the acquisition of new rolling stock broke down, the procedure was postponed. - www.bbj.hu/
