145-CL: locomotives for open access operators |
|
In 1999, ADtrans delivered two 145 series locomotives to BASF, the manufacturer of chemicals from Germany. It was the beginning of open access operators using modern electrics to accomodate their own services. In the following years, more companies got interested in setting up their own railway operator. They started to look for financial parties to finance the modern machines, and so the rise of leasing companies on the railway business started. In this starting period, orders were small, the variety was great, which made us decide to make just one section about all units involved.
From 1999 to 2002, ADtranz/Bombardier supplied 17 145 series locomotives to various operators and leasing companies, that have changed names and appearance many times since then. This section tries to give an overview:
1999: 145-CL 001, 002 > Hannover Mobilien Leasing
It all started with two green painted units, 145-CL 001 and 002 back in 1999. The numbers are based on the DB using the 145 designation for these machines, combined with the letters C and L, which stand for CargoLok. BASF ordered them and they were financed by Hannover Mobilien Leasing. They had a green base livery up till 2006, and then were repainted in silver and red.
145-CL 003, 004 >Deutsche Leasing
145-CL 003 and 004 were originally ordered by Rail4Chem and financed by Deutsche Leasing. They were delivered in October 2000 and February 2001 in a green livery with R4C logos. In July 2010 they still looked the same, although they were operated by Captrain by then.
145-CL 005, 031, 201, 202, 203, 204 > Alpha Trains
Leasing company Alpha Trains, previously known as Locomotion Capital and Angel Trains Cargo, has six units in its fleet. First there was the green painted 145-CL 005, ordered for Rail4Chem. Four units were delivered in the blue and silver livery of the RAG (the 201 to 204) and one unit got a silver livery with blue stripings, operated by TX Logistik (the 031). They all have changed operators since then, but most of them still have the same livery. In March 2010, the 145-CL 031 was selected to be the single one unit to present the new name of its owner, Alpha Trains, and got a striking lime and silver livery.
145-CL 011, 012, 013, 014, 015 > Ascendos Rail
In 2000 and 2001, also the HGK ordered five units for its own services. Porterbrook Leasing Company Ltd (> CBRail > Ascendos Leasing > Beacon Rail) was the one to finance them. They got a red base livery.
145-CL 205 and 206 > RBH Logistics
in 2002, the last two 145 series units for an open access operator were directly delivered to the RAG, RBH Logistics nowadays. They got a blue and silver base livery. |

[DE] 145-CL 005: some locomotives never change
Some locomotives never change. 145-CL 005 was visiting the Bombardier works in Kassel, giving us a good opportunity to have a good look at its current livery. Still you can see the machine once had big Rail4Chem logos. Those were removed in 2010. The green base color however is still the original paint scheme the locomotive had when delivered at 25.04.2001. (CK)

[EU] Breaking: Beacon Rail to acquire Ascendos Rail
Beacon Rail Leasing has entered into an agreement with Ascendos Rail Leasing to acquire the latter. Pending approval from regulatory authorities, the deal is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2016. It is clear that Beacon Rail Leasing is rapidly expanding its portfolio. Earlier it had already taken over 27 diesel locomotives from MRCE (ER20 & Class 66).
With the acquisition of Ascendos again Class 66s (24) and EuroRunners (3) will be added to the fleet, as well as 145-CL 011-015 and 185 001-003. Headquartered in Luxembourg, with additional offices in London and Munich, Ascendos’ current portfolio includes a total of 35 locomotives and 100 freight wagons on lease in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, 35 passenger train units on lease in Germany (LINT and FLIRT), and 67 double decker coaches on lease in Denmark (in service of DSB).
Beacon owns and manages a modern fleet of 190 locomotives, 944 freight wagons and 20 passenger train units. Beacon’s customers include many of the top freight operators in the UK (GB Railfreight, Freightliner and DRS) and leading locomotive and rolling stock operators throughout Europe and Scandinavia.
Commenting on the transaction, Ted Gaffney, CEO of Beacon, said: “The acquisition of Ascendos allows us to continue to build our portfolio of locomotives and is in line with our strategy and commitment to being a leader in this segment of the market. Ascendos’ portfolio of rolling stock nicely complements our existing fleet of locomotives and allows us to expand our presence into the European passenger train market. Overall, we believe that the portfolio and staff of Ascendos is a great fit for Beacon and is additive to our existing platform.”
Pamplona Capital Management (“Pamplona”) acquired Beacon in May 2014 through Pamplona Capital Partners III, LP, a 2011 vehicle with $2.7 billion of committed capital. Since closing, Beacon has been an active acquirer of assets through portfolio acquisitions, the placement of new build orders and the closing of sale / leaseback transactions with various freight and passenger operators, significantly increasing the scale of the portfolio and diversifying both the lessee and asset base.

Bombardier does not only assemble new locomotives in Kassel. Many locomotives, that were built in the past, still get their service, revisions and overhauls at this location. Three examples of locomotives that visited Kassel for various reasons from the past weeks: Beacon Rail 185 600, Rheincargo 145-CL 012 and Alpha Trains 185 608. - CK

[DE] 145-CLs look for / have found a new home
Maybe you still have to get used to it a bit, but several HGK and RBH units, although they still have misleading liveries, are no longer running for these operators. Crossrail from Switzerland now operates 145-CL 014, 203 and 204 for example. Two days ago, the HGK also said goodbye to 145-CL 013 and 015, after nine years of service. Both are naked in red, like the 014. - HS/IvD
Correction: 145-CL 203 is still numbered as such, the information about the new main service number proved to be false.

[DE] DB Schenker hires extra modern electrics.
In the update section one could already see that DB Schenker is hiring eight extra modern electrics from Alpha Trains leasing;
145-CL 005: previously operated by Rail4Chem, painted green. 145-CL 031: this year presented in the new Alpha Trains corporate colours, it will be the first time this unit will be used in these colours in revenue services. Then there are four units formerly used by RAG Bahn&Hafen, most of them off-lease for quite some time now: 145-CL 201 to 204 (also known as 145 096-100 or 145 521-524). These machines are silver and dark blue.
The last two units have the old standard Alpha Trains livery, silver and blue, and were once running for Connex. 185 515 and 516 have been standing around at Dessau for quite some time last year, but came back in business this winter, being used for replacement services of the Berchtesgadener Land Bahn.

[DE] Alpha Trains 145-CL 031 close-up
Last Thursday, unit 145-CL 031 was outshopped at Dangelmayr Oberflächentechnik in Berlin in a new yellowish and silver livery. It is the first locomotive to promote the new name of its owner: Alpha Trains, formerly known as Angel Trains Cargo. One can argue about the design, but for sure the 031 will attract more attention everyday, now the Dispolok yellow is slowly disappearing under a think layer of black paint.
BTW, the exact renaming of several Angel Trains divisions:
Angel Trains Espana S.A., Madrid => Alpha Trains Iberia S.A., Madrid
Angel Trains Italia S.r.l., Roma => Alpha Trains Italia S.r.l., Roma
Angel Trains Cargo NV/SA, Antwerpen => Alpha Trains NV/SA, Antwerpen
