This special section is about the 185.2 series locomotives that are property of DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia (former Railion Scandinavia), joint-venture of DB Schenker Rail Deutschland and Swedish Green Cargo. It describes the units that have been taken out of the ongoing delivery for Db Schenker Rail Deutschland as well the six units that Green Cargo ordered on 16.01.2008.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
In February 2007, DB Schenker announced its plan to equip 17 new locomotives with a 'Scandinavia package'. This enables them to use these machines for cross-border services from Sweden to Germany via the Denmark peninsula. DB Schenker decided to use Traxx 2 platform machines because of their improved cab isolation (compared with Traxx 1 platform locomotives) which is especially useful in the harsh environments in Sweden. Finally, the designated DB 185 321-337 were selected to form the Scandinavian sub serie.
The construction of 185 321 and 322 was rescheduled (around 4-5 months earlier), so they could already make their first trials in December 2007, resulting in the final approval of Traxx 2 machines with Scandinavia package by the end of April 2008. First commercial services with 'Scandi' 185s started in the third week of June 2008.
The 185.2s with Scandinavia-package are property of a joint-venture of DB Schenker Rail Deutschland and Green Cargo from Sweden. The German company brought in 17 units from the 185.2 series, and Green Cargo ordered six similar units in January 2008.
But there where some changes here, making it all very unclear who owns which locomotive. We see it like this: 185 321-331 and 335-337 were delivered to DB's subsidiary Railion Denmark. 185 332-334 became property of Green Cargo. All units were brought into the fleet of the joint-venture, Railion Scandinavia (formed out of Railion Denmark). Railion Scandinavia was renamed to DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia in February 2009.
By then, the six units that Green Cargo had ordered still had to be delivered; these units got service number 185 401-406 and the normal red DB livery. To compensate for the three units that the DB gave to Green Cargo, no. 401-403 became property of DB Schenker Rail Deutschland (not Scandinavia!). No. 404-406 went to Green Cargo again and became part of the DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia fleet.

DB Cargo is the new DB Schenker Rail

update 2016|03|03
DB Cargo is the new DB Schenker Rail
You may have read about the current re-organization of the Deutsche Bahn. Together with consultation company McKinsey, it is redefining its services and organizational structure, so it can face the rapidly changing market circumstances.
One of the measures taken is the merger of all rail transport services of the Deutsche Bahn into one division now called 'Traffic & Transport'. Railfreight logistics is taken out of the logistics division and will continue under the 'good old' DB Cargo brand name. To the outside world the Traffic & Transport division will brand itself as 'DB' so we don't expect locomotives nor carriages to get DB Cargo logos again. So the DB logo currently in use will stay as it is.
Until the end, all international railfreight divisions (for example DB Schenker Rail Polska and DB Schenker Rail Italia) will be renamed as DB Cargo.
The non-rail logistic services will continue under the name DB Schenker. Separating the rail related activities from the rest fits the strategy to (partially) sell the new DB Schenker. DB has intentions to do this, but faces strong opposition form the German government. To be continued.
For our website, it means we have to rename the owner name of several thousands of locomotives. This will be done in one big batch. We are working on it.

[SE/NO] modern locomotives slowly adjust to Scandinavian conditions
Regularly we report on Traxx locomotives running in Scandinavia. The icy weather conditions up north require modifications to these locomotives. At this moment it is a exclusive problem for Bombardier, as it is the only company having its products active in every day (freight service) practice in these regions. We already had Railpool 185s with rack on their roof, locomotives from the same pool with additional anti-slip braking systems and new we got images of DB Schenker's 185 405-5 testing an anti slip system now in use on the rebuilt litt Rd-locos (Former litt Rc2 units). - BD
In this light, it is interesting to see what will be offered to the Finnish railways, that plan a large order of at least eighty new electrics. These will have to function under severe weather conditions too and replace the robust Sovjet-built SR-1 class. Let's see to what extend manufacturers will modify their standard platform solutions to meet the special conditions.

[DE] update on 185 401-406
The red Traxx locomotives 185 401-406 are still a mysterious section in the fleet of DB Schenker and/or Green Cargo, so it seems. The facts we have:
Based on the NVR markings, now 401-403 are property of DB Schenker in Germany, 185 404-406 are owned by Green Cargo. Bombardier still sees Green Cargo as customer for all six units, but as DB Schenker gave three units to Green Cargo in 2008 (185 332-334), the DB got three units from the Swedish in return (185 401-403).
The 401-406 were all built in 2009 and got approved in May-September 2009, all being configured for running Sweden, Denmark and Germany. 401-403 however did not leave Kassel before 21.12.2009 and where then transported to Mannheim. We don't know exactly when 404-406 set sail for Northern Europe yet.
Now we have the first spots of a German 185 40x in revenue service. And we have a close up of the technical inscriptions of 185 401, 402 and 403 too. They have been re-approved for revenue service on 31.12.2009, and for Germany only. All equipment for Denmark and Sweden is disabled. Also it not allowed to use these machines in multiple traction. Therefore DB Schenker decided to hire them them to its subsidiary, RBH Logistics. The EBA numbers of 401-403 however are still the old ones; 07G10KB 028-030 are from a serie that is used for DE/DK/SE configurated machines (eg Hector Rail 241.010 is 07G10KB 027).
185 406 was spotted in Kopenhangen lately. There is no proof yet of any regular service with 185 404-406. - DR/OB

[DE/DK/SE] 185 401!?!

|
update 2009|05|09
[DE/DK/SE] 185 401!?!
The delivery of DB Schenkers 185.2 series has progressed up till number 377 at this moment, but then there is a red painted Traxx machines with German service number 185 401! It concerns a Traxx AC2 locomotive fitted with the Scandinavia package, making it possible to run in Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
DB Schenker Rail and Green Cargo from Sweden plan a pool of 23 Traxx AC2s to be exploited by their common rail operator DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia. The DB 185 321-337 are now part of this pool, and Green Cargo has ordered the remaining six units to be delivered mid-2009. However, 185 332-334 have been delivered to Green Cargo, so one can say that the first three units of the Green Cargo order are already in service.
Two things can explain the existence of the 185 401; It can be the 4th locomotive for Green Cargo. Together with two other locomotives it can make the order of six complete. Or 185 401 can be the first of three machines that will be delivered to DB Schenker Rail to replace the 185 332-334. Further reseach has to make clear what is the right scenario. Maybe there is even a third reason why the 401 is being built, please let us know if you know more! - AH/DSO

[DK] 185 321-337 > Railion Scandinavia
|
|
update 2008|11|28
[DK] 185 321-337 > Railion Scandinavia
There has been quite some confusion about who exactly owns the 185.2 locomotives retrofitted with the Scandinavian package, and taken out of the DB order for 399 Traxx F140 AC2 machines. 185 321-337, the units involved, were delivered with different owner-markings (-GC/-RDK), not making things easier.
Now it is like this: all 17 machines are property of Railion Scandinavia, a cooperation of Railion Deutschland from Germany (51%) and Greencargo from Sweden (49%). Railion Scandinavia is formerly known as Railion Danmark, which has changed its name per 15.06.2008. Before it was a 100% subsidiairy of Railion Deutschland, now it is common property of Railion Deutschland and Greencargo. - A thanks goes out to Karl-Arne Richter for doing research on this topic.
All this happended during the delivery of the 185 321-337, hence the confusion. In the mean time, several units (eg 185 329 and 330) have been decorated with yellow warning striping on their steps up front. - DSO

Todat, 185 335, 336 and 337 have left the Kassel assembly plant. With these three machines to total batch of 17 DB 185.2s with Scandinavia package (designated 185 321-337) is complete. According to their NVR-numbers, ending with -RDK, Railion Denmark is responsible for these three. That's remarkle, as most other machines from the batch have been delivered with a -GC marking (GreenCargo).... - DSO

[DE] the DB about its new corporate identity
In the current issue of Railways (01.2008), a magazine published online by the DB/Railion, an article can be found in which the DB makes clear how its new names, logos and identity will be applied on its rolling stock. For locomotives, not much will change; what was expected becomes reality, all machines will get only a DB logo, because this subscribes the neutral character of DB Schenker and DB Intermodal (Both DB subsidiaries for freight operation) in respect to its customers that operate in the (inter)national logistics market too. - Railways / Railion.com
