[DE] Traxx and HVLE: Five years top performance on the mountain
This year, the two Traxx F140 AC2 locomotives (Railcolor: 185 640 and 641) owned and operated by the Havelländische Eisenbahn (HVLE) celebrate a remarkable jubilee on the steepest rail section in Germany, the Rubelandbahn in the mountainous Harz region. Since 2008, the two locomotives transport lime from the quarries near Rubeland to Blankenburg, where the raw materials are redistributed. The locomotives tackle gradients of up to 60 per mille and gain 400 meters in altitude over the 14 kilometer distance. Going uphill, the train has an overall weight of 500 tons and downhill - with loaded cars - 1,500 tons. The locomotives travel the distance between seven and nine times per day, seven days a week. “For us, high vehicle availability is of utmost importance. In retrospect, the two Traxx locomotives have met all our expectations. They are highly reliable and available for use nearly one-hundred per cent of the time", says Uwe Wullstein, Technology and Operations Manager at HVLE.
The Rubelandbahn (originally Harzbahn) was built by the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Eisenbahn (HBE) between 1880 and1886. Today, the Rubelandbahn between Blankenburg and Rubeland is the only railway in Germany that is equipped with the 25kV / 50Hz voltage system. Since the Traxx AC2 locomotives are equipped with this as well as the 15kV / 16.7Hz voltage system, they operate on this route without difficulty. - Bombardier
Railcolor: true, HVLE operates a third Traxx AC2 locomotive, the designated 185 583, but this locomotive is dedicated to (longhaul) freight services other than the Rubelandbahn.
