The market for railfreight transport in Europe has gradually been liberalized since the 90s. Also the Swedish national railways (SJ) had to cut-up their activities and divide them over newly founded commercial companies. Green Cargo AB is since 2001 the name of the company that took over freight transport of the SJ.
After some years, Green Cargo also became an interesting prey for Railion Deutschland from Germany. A take-over was never realised, but a very close cooperation was. Railion Deutschland did take over the Danish freight operator DSB Gods and renamed it as Railion Denmark. In 2008 Railion Scandinavia was formed out of this company, while 49% of the company was sold to Green Cargo. In February 2009 Railion Scandinavia was renamed DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia.

In 2018 Green Cargo and DB Cargo ended their close cooperation and the JV was abondoned. The six AC2 locomotives got a Green Cargo livery and a new designation: Litt Br.

order 2: Green Cargo Litt Re
On 31.10.2008, Green Cargo placed the order for another sixteen units, worth 51 million Euro. Delivery is scheduled for February-July 2010. One day earlier, Green Cargo made public that it had signed a contract with steel producer SSAB, for which these machines are needed. From 2010 to 2019, 4 million tonnes of slab and rolled steel annually wil be transported for SSAB. Greencargo will facilitate return services from Luleå and Borlänge, from Borlänge and Oxelösund and the shunting activities at the SSAB plants in both Oxelösund and Borlänge.
