Hector Rail is a young and rapidly expanding open access operator from Sweden, which started first commercial services in 2004. Considering the fleet of HectorRail the company, Sweden has really become an asylum for second hand machines and (experimental) left-overs. In 2007 however Hector Rail announced it first major investment in new rolling stock; they wanted to purchase ten Traxx F140AC2 machines for long-haul services in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Finally it was decided to award Bombardier with this order in three stages, of six, two and two units each.
Hector Rail was the first operator to order locomotives configured for the Scandinavian corridor, inspiring DB Schenker and others to purchase similar equipped locomotives.
In the first week of december 2010, Hector Rail started extra services for ScandFibre Logistics, which it took over from DB Schenker. As a result, all ten 241 units were needed for the Sweden-Germany corridor. Therefore, Hector Rail decided to acquire two additional locomotives in december 2010 so it could continue to offer cross-border services to new customers. This order included an option for four additional locomotives. - Hector Rail

update 2015|08|08
[DE/DK] No voltage: Hector Rail uses 241 and NAH.SH 245 in combination for its freight trains
According to various sources, Bombardier's customer Hector Rail wants to know if the operator can successfully use a Traxx DE ME locomotive in mixed traction with its Class 241 series electrics. Now a vital part of the Danish network north of Padborg is temporarily without catenary, there is an excellent opportunity to test this.
On the sections without overhead power, 245 204 is used to pull the freight trains while being controlled from the Class 241 Traxx AC2 in front of it. Various impressions of the Multi Engine Traxx during combined operations can be found here and here.
The Hector Rail 241 in these images is technically used as driving trailer. Its pantographs are down and locked. The main switch is off. Tractive effort comes 100% from the NAH.SH 245 204 with is controlled from the cabin of the 241. So, there is no driver in the cab of the diesel locomotive.
Although unconfirmed, it has been indicated that after testing in Denmark has been completed 245 204 will also pay Sweden a visit.

[SE/DK/DE] HectorRail orders two Traxx locomotives
Hector Rail is expanding. Just this week the Swedish operator started extra services for ScandFibre Logistics for example. As a result, CargoLink had to return the three 241 series locomotives it was hiring from Hector Rail. All ten units of this type, the only ones that can be used on the Sweden-Germany corridor in the fleet, are now needed on this route.
Therefore, Hector Rail has decided to acquire two additional locomotives so that it can continue to offer cross-border services to new customers. The delivery of 241 no. 11 and 12 is scheduled for August 2011. There is an option for an additional four locomotives. - Hector Rail

[DE] new Traxx locomotives
On 20.01.2009 the new HectorRail unit 241.008 was spotted at Kassel Rangierbahnhof. The machine is nicknamed 'Galore'. Maybe this name is also James-Bond-inspired, coming from Pussy Galore from the 007-blockbuster 'Goldfinger'. This would make sense as 241.007, delivered and transported to Sweden in the last weeks of December 2008, carries the name Bond, of course... These two new machines together represent the second batch of this type for Swedish operator HectoRail, being ordered in November 2007. In May 2008 another two machines have been ordered, but their delivery is still pending. - CK/DSO/RIRF
Other fresh ones from Kassel in the picture. CBRail 285 105 leaves Kassel with Railion unit 185 002, which has had an overhaul and now fits in better with its normal 185 series collegues. Third machine is Veolia 185 598, which seems to have a better future than its Traxx MS brothers. Its the first 185.2 machine for Veolia, two more are on order. The other two picture show the also brand new 486 503 for BLS Cargo and 186 223 for ATC/CobraRail. A special thanks goed out to Christian Klotz for these images.

Hector Rail 241: General history |
|
Tearing down the borders
In March 2007, Hector Rail signed a five year contract with Van Dieren Maritime to provide traction for intermodal trains between Norrköping and the Ruhr Area. Services would start in January 2008 already, to the delivery of the designated 241 series had to be accelerated to have the first two machines ready and approved that month. In July 2007 designated 241.001 was completed in Kassel and sent up north to complete homologation processes for Denmark and Sweden. Both projects were completed on time, but getting access to Germany took a while longer. In the first months of 2008, the German operator MittelWeserBahn took over the HectorRail convoy at the German-Danisch border, to transport it to its final destination. But on 22.04.2008, HectorRail finally got permission to tear down the final border, and HectorRail 241.001 had to honour to be the first Traxx unit to complete a non-stop run form Sweden to Germany.
185 568 transforms into 241.002
Remarkable is the history of locomotive number two of the first batch. The machine was originally built as a Bombardier demonstrator used to test ETCS safety systems and to take part in the homologation process of the Traxx locomotives in the Netherlands. After it had completed its tasks after the summer of 2007, the machines was repainted, retrofitted and tested as Hector Rail 241.002. In January it was delivered to Swedish operator.
Names for HR locomotives
All Hector Rail 241 series locomotives are named after a character from the Star Wars movie trilogy. Names are documented in the corresponding locomotive profiles, which one visit by clicking on a service number in the list at the bottom of this section.
HR machines for rent
HectorRail placed the order for ten Traxx locomotives 'on the grow'. In 2008-2010, several units were hired to other operators.
TX Logistik AB used unit 241.005 (per 04.2008) and 006 (per 05.2008).
CargoLink from Norway used unit 241.004, 006 and 008 from August 2009 to December 2010. Thenthey had to return those machine sto Hector Rail as they were all needed for the new ScandFibre contract. Cargolink replced them with hired units form Railpool.
Hector Rail also has one unit available to Veolia, to haul passenger trains from Stockholm to Malmö since July 2009.
