1st order |
Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH (LNVG) in Lower Saxony, Germany, started to set up its own pool of railway vehicles back in 1997. By doing this the LNVG saved time (rolling stock could be ordered before an EVU / rail operator was contracted) and they saved money, by ordering coaches, train sets and locomotives in greater numbers.
Since 2003 various Traxx locomotives have been added to the LNVG fleet. They are now all hired to Metronom Eisenbahngesell-schaft GmbH, the operator that has been contracted by the LNVG. (Originally, the name Metrorail was chosen, but this name was already in use). In December 2003 Metronom started services on the Hamburg-Bremen and Hamburg-Uelzen relations using Bombardier Traxx1 P160 AC1 locomotives (ME 146 01-10) and corresponding rakes of double deck coaches, built by the same manufacturer.
Since then Metronom is expanding rapidly. In December 2005 the Uelzen-Gottingen relation was taken over and additional rolling stock was ordered; new double deck coaches and eight Traxx2 P160 AC2 locomotives, designated ME146 11-18. Bombardier migrated its complete production line to the Traxx 2 concept in the mean time, hence the different design.
In December 2007, Metronom also introduced its concept on the Hamburg-Luneburg, Hamburg-Torstedt (exploited as Metronom Regional - MEr), and Hamburg-Cuxhaven. For the first two services mentioned again nine Traxx2 electrics were built, designated 146 531-539. The line Hamburg-Cuxhaven is not electrified and therefore the trains are hauled by Traxx 2E platform based diesel-electric machines; the LNVG 246 series.
After years of trials. The LNVG added two extra locomotives to iets fleet eraly 2013: 146 541 and 542. Bombardier is responsible for the maintanance of all Traxx units.

On 30.12.2012, locomotive 146 542-6 had its first try in revenue service, after several years of tests. It hauled a Metronom Regional service, during which it broke down unfortunately. Our image shows the locomotive (with Metronom logos on both its noses) with a similar train, one day later. On 02.01.2013, the machine was seen again. - JL/EK/KAR

[DE] 146 541 testing with Metronom-coaches
Bombardier's 146 541 and 542 are regular guests in the Schwarzwald, where the extreme hight differences on the different routes prove to be ideal testing ground. The image shows a trial run between Villingen (Schwarzwald) and Karlsruhe arriving in Offenburg. It is the first time we see such a run with metronom double-deck coaches. - YH
Since 2010 Bombardier is facing a delivery delay of three additional TRAXX AC2 locomotives to LNVG, to be used for the Metronom services in Northern Germany. Because Bombardier could not deliver, now TRAXX AC machines of Veolia (e.g. 146 519 and 521) have been hired to fill the gaps. In 2010, the two machines mentioned, that are part of this order, where completed, but up till now they have only be used for tests and trials. DB Schenker's 185 406 has also been used in this testing program. The Eisenbahn-Bundesambt (EBA) is more strict than ever.

metronom 246 004-6 and metronom 146 532-7 now carry an extra slogan: '50.000.000 km - Sicher mit dem Zug durch Niedersachsen'. They celebrate the fact that the Bombardier Traxx locomotives and double deck coaches, property of Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG) and operated by metronom, have completed 50.000.000 km since 2003. Metronom operates a netwerk of 510 km and interconnects the cities Cuxhaven, Bremen, Hamburg, Uelzen, Hannover and Göttingen. - Bombardier/LNVG
