|
1st order |
In 2006 and 2007, lease companies really started to invest in multi systems electrics for international freight services in Europe. Like Angel Trains Cargo, CBRail decided to invest in Bombardier products: press release 08.02.2006. This order included the new Traxx 2E MS sub type, capable of running under all 4 common catenary systems in Europe. At the end of 2007 another 10 multi system electrics were ordered. Both orders include two different country specific configurations. The D/A/NL/BE homologated machines will operate on the corridors from the harbours of Rotterdam and Antwerp towards Germany. The D/A/CH/I homologated machines will cross the Alps on the German-Italian freight corridor.
These E 186s, as most CBRail machines, are easy to recognize by their light grey basic colour. In September, the very first CBRail MS locomotive left the Bombardier Kassel works in Germany.
The first 10 D/A/CH/I homologated locomotives were originally designated E 186 151-160, but on demand of Italian rail way authority Cesifer, they were re-assigned as E 186 901-910, for easier identification.

[NL] Dutch railways want more DABNL multisystem locomotives
While searching for a Czech operator issuing its third tender, we also stumbled upon an entry from the Dutch railways (NS) that "intends to conclude a framework agreement for a period of 5 years (with the possibility for extension for an additional 3x1 years) with all selected suppliers capable of providing (a) lease(s) for (a) TRAXX DABNL locomotive(s) that are suitable for use on the Dutch network, including HSL (High Speed Line) and the Belgian Network (including line 4) and suitable for sandwich operation with the existing fleet of NS Traxx DABNL Locomotives and ICRmh Coaches, on all routes."
The end date for interested parties to submit a bid is 03.03.2017.
Railcolor: NS is also looking for more DE/AT/BE/NL configured locomotives for pulling Intercity Direct services. NS already has 66 such machines in its fleet (45 in ownership, 21 on hire from Alpha Trains and Macquarie Rail), of which 61 units are currently available to NS' Intercity Direct program. Three other units are being used for software tests: 186 002, 186 122 and 186 236. The workshops in Dessau have just completed a revision 186 240 and 186 237 is subhired by NS to the Belgian railways to pull trains between Amsterdam and Brussels.

update 2015|06|15
[NL/DE] Traxx MS replaces 1700 series locomotives for IC to Berlin in the Netherlands
NS International, the division of the Dutch Railways about international train travel, is using Traxx MS locomotives now for the IC 146/147 services (Amsterdam - Berlin vv). Up til now these trains were pulled by 1700 series locomotives, but their availability is problematic. Two locomotives are available, Macquarie Rail 186 148 and 149, which were already used by NS International for CityNightLine services.
The Traxx locomotives pull the IC trains from Amsterdam to Bad Bentheim (DE) vv. It is not clear if the usage of the Traxx locomotives is a temporary solution or not.

[DE/BE] Crossrail changes logos on Macquarie Rail 186 150
Crossrail was not happy with the application of its logos on the hired 186 150. In April the light grey machine got red logos on its sides and front, but their position have been changed in the mean time. The smaller side logos were removed again, up front there is now a logo in the center. The green (Captrain colored) front bar and lamp houses still could use some red paint though. That would compliment the livery better.

[NL/BE] Direct Brussels - Amsterdam Benelux services reinstated
This images shows SNCB no. 2809 / E 186 201 waiting for its first duty as Benelux service from Amsterdam to Brussels. After a two year break, this 'classic' international trains is back on its original route. And now 16 times a day, instead of 12.
In the past years the service only connected Brussels with The Hague HS after. Originally it was cancelled completely in favour of the new high speed services with AnsaldoBreda's Fyra V250 trains, but after these trains were taken out of service, the Benelux trains were reinstated quickly. But as train paths to Amsterdam were then already taken by other trains, the Benelux had to be shortened.
As from today, it run on its original route again, so it is not using the high speed lines between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp. These faster trains will be introduced in the next years.
For the current services, Dutch ICRm coaches are being used, like before. Many of these still wear the Fyra livery. These stickers will gradually disappear. In the past months, NS has been retrofitting more ICRm coaches, coming from domestic services, for the Benelux services. They are now forming fixed rakes of coaches in the normal NS blue and yellow livery. They got a different door closing system using spanjolets, a demand of the Belgian railways, that approved these additional coaches only last week. The newly formed rakes also have a driving trailer, but this is not used as such. This coach is taken along as it has features a toilet for people with physical disabilities and extra space for service personnel. Locomotives are always pulling the trains.
NMBS/SNCB, the Belgian railways currently have ten Traxx MS locomotives from its freight pool available for the Benelux services: 2802, 2803, 2806, 2809, 2812, 2813, 2815, 2821, 2832 and 2833. But more are needed (especially now the 2821 crashed onto a car last night).
The software of NS lease locomotive 186 142 has already been downgraded so it can assist on the Benelux service. The machine was already seen in Brussels yesterday. NS plans on having the newly delivered 186 001-019 being homologated for Belgium too as back-up.

[NL] Test runs with E 186 149 and 239 in the Netherlands
On 28.10.2014, test runs were made in the Netherlands, using two Macquarie Rail E 186 locomotives in 'sandwich' with six ICRm coaches. With this train the functioning of the machines in multiple mode was evaluated. Both locomotives could give traction, or only one. If the machine at the end of the train gave traction, it was operated from the leading machine.
During the test runs, the longitudinal forces and shear on the first locomotive was measured using a special coupling and cameras. - CR
Both locomotives used, e.g. E 186 149 and 239, are part of the locomotive fleet of the Dutch railways (NS) for some time now, but are rarely seen. The test are being held for the Amsterdam - Breda shuttle service of NS.

[NL] Intercity Direct: All Traxx locomotives out of service [updatedx2]
All Traxx MS locomotives, used for the Intercity Direct services (Amsterdam - Schiphol - Rotterdam - Breda vv) were taken out of service on 08.04.2014. Passengers had to use normal intercity trains running over the conventional network instead.
Bombardier requested the Dutch railways (NS), operator of the Intercity Direct, to put all locomotives aside as the manufacturer wanted to check the pantographs of all locomotives. Appearantly, there was a problem with the pantographs big enough to justify this drastic measure.
Update 08.04.2014 9.00 pm: The first locomotives have been inspected by Bombardier and are approved for commercial service again. Tomorrow NS will start with an hourly Intercity Direct service again. Depending on how long it will take to inspect all remaining locomotives, the frequency of the services will be increased as soon as possible. - nu.nl / telegraaf.nl

[NL] 186 142 arriving in the Netherlands [updatedx2]
On 21.11.2013, Macquarie Rail E 186 142 arrived in the Netherlands. Curious is its NVR-numbers ending with NL-NS markings.
Until 28.11.2013 the machine will be used for transition tests on all track sections with ETCS in the Netherlands. It first ran on the HSL-Zuid from Amsterdam to Breda. Then it visited the Hanzelijn running from Amsterdam to Zwolle. Next were the Havenspoorlijn in Rotterdam and the BetuweRoute from Kijfhoek shuntyard to Emmerich (DE).
Finally the new software equipment on board of the 186 142 will be tested on Roosendaal (NL) - Essen (BE) and Montzen (BE) - Aachen-West (DE).

[NL/BE] The end of Fyra
|
|
update 2013|11|13
[NL/BE] The end of Fyra
The brand name 'Fyra' will disappear per 15.12.2013. In Belgium and the Netherlands, name has become too much a synonym for the problematic V250 trainsets built by AnsaldoBreda. The 'conventional' Fyra-service Amsterdam - Schiphol - Rotterdam - Breda vv is a success but will be rebranded too.
NS Hispeed (a name that will disappear too as this company will be re-integrated into the Dutch Railways again) will introduce the new name 'Intercity Direct' for the Amsterdam - Breda shuttle.
Good news for the users for the future 'Intercity Direct': Per 15.12.2013 you don't have to pay an extra fee anymore for train tickets on the Breda - Rotterdam branch. - treinreiziger.nl/nu.nl

[NL] Extra Fyra services Amsterdam - Rotterdam
Starting today, The Dutch railways (NS) offer additional rush hour diagrams for the Fyra services Amsterdam - Rotterdam. The loco-hauled Fyra trains connect Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam and Breda. NS uses its own Intercity coaches, Alpha Trains locomotives 186 111-122 and Macquarie Rail 186 144, 149, 236 and 239 for these services. The title image shows locomotive 186 118 with a set of coaches in Fyra (Prio) design close to Rotterdam on the high speed line.
The exact time table can be found here.
Background information to the Fyra services is available in Bombardier Traxx Tour (look for Traxx F160 MS 2e).

[BE] 'Hispeed' Traxx no. 186 111 in Belgium
One of the 'Hispeed' Traxx locomotives, normally used by the Dutch railways for the Amsterdam-Breda shuttle, is currently in Belgium. Locomotive 186 111 has been seen during several test runs during the night. If these runs runs include high speed lines is unknown. - RM
The Dutch railways is slowly but steadily expanding its fleet with extra Traxx MS locomotives. There are the red 186 111-122 leased from Alpha Trains. 186 144 and 236 had a small break but joined the fleet again early this year. The real newbies are Macquarie Rail 186 149 and 239. Both were previously hired to Continental Rail Services, that had to file for bankruptcy in June.

[DE] The Hosena train crash aftermath
lr-online.de brings a new article on the Hosena train crash (July 2012). The freight train hauled by 186 140 destroyed the Hosena signal box, killing one person.
It will take years to recover from this accident. A new signal box will be erected in 2014, which is a real challenge as building such a system takes five years normally (the article states). The capacity of the station is still fifty percent and the financial damage is huge, in the range of tenths of millions. Also, E 186 140, which is not a real surprise, will be scrapped. - FG

Bombardier 186 240 is becoming a real globe trotter, well in Europe then. In the last week of May 2011, it moved from the Netherlands to Slovakia (25-26.05.2011). There it started homologation trials under the license of Express Rail. A major break trough for Slovakia, as it is the first [edit] Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) electric to run on the conventional network. True, Siemens ES64U2's have been around, but only on new track sections with ETCS. - JS

[PL] Lotos hires more Railpool Traxx MSs
Again, LOTOS from Poland will extend its fleet with new Traxx locomotives. They will hire five additional MS units from Railpool. As they are operating nine units at this moment (186 136, 137, 139, 141, 143, 145, 146, 147 and 271) their fleet will grow to 14 units.
LOTOS also has ten Traxx DE diesels on order, so they are expanding rapidly. - LOTOS

[PL] Lotos Kolej receives six new Traxx units
It's a bit a puzzle, but lets see what we got. Lotos Kolej, operator from Poland, recently closed a deal with Railpool for five Traxx MS units, with an option for three more.
Now there is this item, about Lotos recieving six Traxx units today. It tells us Lotos wants eight new units right away (or at least for the next nine months). The image that goes with the article shows us three light grey Traxx MS units with Lotos logos. They are also not repainted in the full Railpool livery, they only have the light blue bar. Yesterday these were already taped in Poland. It must be the DE-AT-PL configurated 186 136, 137 and 139, stored at Kassel since 2008 and originally built for CBRail, hence the light grey livery.
The other three newcomers are 186 141, 143 and 145, in service of Przewozy Regionalne (PR) until this week. PR was more fond of the EuroSprinter, so the Traxx units had to go and ES 64 F4-451 to 456 were picked up.
So now we have seven Traxx units at Lotos, 6 newcomers and 186 147, already at Lotos since 2009. But that's not it; the rynek-kolejowy.pl article says there is more to come. Lotos plans to have 20-25 Traxx units in service in 2011. Railpool 186 146 has already been spotted with Lotos logos around Kassel, so there we have number eight...
We will keep you informed.

[EU] CBRails (un)wanted
Today two Traxx units completed a test run; Railpool E 186 141-8 and CBRail 185 637. Together they illustrate the unpredictability of the current market for leasing and hiring locomotives. CBRail is one of the key players in this market at this moment, but its fleet strategy is very hard to follow. Bombardier is selling units that were originally built for CBRail to other customers now, like 186 141, 143, 147 and 181. But at the same time, other units are still accepted. 185 637 is the third unit of a batch of five AC2 electrics (635-639) the will delivered to CBRail next year. - TW

[PL] Lotos Koley hires Traxx unit 186 147
Since yesterday, Lotos Koley from Poland is using a Traxx MS electric for its services. On Friday 13.11.2009 the operator recieved such a unit from leasing company Railpool. The locomotive concerned is a newbee in the Railpool fleet; E 186 147. This unit was originally built for leasing company CBRail but they decided to cancel the delivery. During the past weeks the 147 was therefore repainted from light grey to Railpool silver and its country specific package was changed from DE-AT-NL-BE to DE-AT-PL, now making it possible to use it in Poland. The HGK will also return two machines to leasing company MRCE Dispolok. 185 544 and 573 will be returned tomorrow, after their HGK logos have been removed.
E186 148 and 149 have arrived in the Netherlands and were handed over to ITL, which already is using them right now. Logos and numbers still need to be applied.

Macquarie Rail TRAXX MS2e: Pick a colour! |

It took CBRail quite some effort to decide, or better not to decide, with which colours they wanted their E186 series to be delivered with. In February 2006 the press statement of the first included the publication of a machine painted in purple, silver and dark red. However, at the Innotrans international railway fair 2006, in Berlin, wooden models and canvas prints were presented at the Bombardier stands, showing future CBRail locomotives in orange and blue.

In August and September 2007, the very first locomotives came from the production line, painted in... a light grey basic tone, looking a bit unfinished. CBRail did not agree on a colour scheme on time, so Bombardier had to decide for it self, resulting in a neutral colour. It provides indeed a neutral basis for customers of CBRail, when they want to apply their logos in these machines!
the very first machine, E 186 151, was transported to Italy in September 2007
