In 2009 and 2010, 70 units of the BB 27000 series were transferred to the fleet of Akiem, the lease company of SNCF and became available to other operators. Units involved: BB 27111 to 27180. |

These images show Akiem locomotive no.27115 being lifted of its bogies and put on a truck. The locomotive was then transported to the VFLI workshops in Montmirail. Most likely, the locomotive will be scrapped, after removing all re-usable parts. It would be the first of its series to be taken out of service. - NV
Almost two years ago, on 02.02.2012, the locomotove was hit by a loose load on a freight train in the opposite direction.. This accident took place in Maillé. At that moment, the locomotive was operated by Euro Cargo Rail. - DH

This month, a new regional railfreight company will commence services in France: RegioRail Lorraine. This operator is the seventh "Opérateur ferroviaire de proximité (OFP)" in its country. RegioRail Lorraine is based in Blainville.
As from 16.12.2013, RegioRail Lorraine will run six weekly shuttles from Blainville-Damelevières (Meurthe-et-Moselle) to Golbey near Epinal
Important customer of RegioRail Lorraine is paper manufacturer Norske Skog. ETF and RegioRail Languedoc-Roussillon are partners in transporting the goods for this customer. Norske Skog brings up to 300.000 tonnes of freight to rail annually.
Both images in this item show three Prima electric locomotives with a new livery. Yesterday they ran from Lens depot to the Paris area, where the ETF stopped off, the other two continuing to Miramas.
27125M is now ETF-white and will be used on a three-times weekly service from Blainville to Miramas. 27137M is blue and is hired to RegioRail Lorraine. This machine will be used for a thrice-weekly Miramas-Le Boulou service (RegioRail Languedoc-Roussillon) and possibly from Le Boulou to Boussens, near Toulouse.
The third locomotive, 27143M, is not hired yet to an operator, but it is blue and sports the logos of both previously mentioned companies. It is a reserve for now. - AD/DH/KAR/wk-transport-logistique.fr

A recently repainted Akiem locomotive is 27120M, now hired to VFLI.
The number of Akiem locomotives, operated by its mother company SNCF is decreasing for quite some time now. At the end of 2013, Akiem expects to only get 30% of its revenue out of contracts with Fret SNCF. However, this does not mean that the number of Akiem locomotives operated by SNCF Geodis is decreasing at the same pace. Many Akiem locomotives are now hired to VFLI for example, another name, but also a SNCF Geodis subsidiary.

Edit: The Railcolor visitor has been very helpful today and yesterday. We got a lot of answers to our Midi-question. Thank you all! As you can see we recieverd an extra Midi-picture, 427124M in Beziers. This is how it works:
As a first stage, Fret SNCF has asked AKIEM to modify 41 Prima locomotives, so they are compatible with the special conditions, required to run safely on the Midi-lines in the south of France, such as the Bordeaux - Toulouse line (Bordeaux - Hendaye, Bayonne/Dax - Toulouse, Toulouse - Latour de Carol), and Béziers - Neussargues (south of Massif Central). Units involved are BB 27119-137, 142-155, 173-180. Initial tests with a BB 27000 on the midi-network were completed in June 2010. Batch modification is going on right now.
The catenary system on these Midi lines is somewhat different from the other 1500V DC lines in France. This is inherited from the former Midi railway company, that gave birth to SNCF in the late thirties, when the railways in France where nationalised. These lines have a larger 'zigzag', or amplitude. As the number of older locomotives with these collectors are slowly going down, now two-system Prima's need to be adjusted, so that can operate from the North-East of France to Hendaye, at the Spanish border.
On almost all two-system french locos, both pantos have a 1600 mm wide collector, Although of different materials (25 kV AC > two carbon stripes / 1500V DC > eight copper/steel stripes). Having the same dimension, they allow 'emergency operation' with the false pantograph for the system. (Although with restrictions: speed restriction with DC panto under AC catenary / power restriction with AC panto under DC catenary).
This is possible on most of the French Network because :
- AC lines allow 1450 to 1600 mm collectors
- DC lines allow 1600 to 1950 mm collectors
But you see the problem; On a BB 27000M with a new 1950 mm contact on the DC pantograph, the back-up plan does not work anymore. It will cause problems. So next to that, the M's get a software update making it impossible to use the adjusted pantograph under AC catenary. Same for the normal AC pantograph on the DC-Midi lines.
Also these units can run on the complete French network, but without the back-up plan.

In the mean time, we were able to get a clear overview over the Akiem fleet.
From Fret SNCF, Akiem has now BB 27111-27180 (70 units) in its portfolio, together with BB 37001-37060, minus the crashed and scrapped 37007 (59 units).
Then, Akiem is managing several series from the former Veolia Vargo fleet. Officially they are all property of the VC Holding from Clichy. First there are nine Prima locomotives: 37506, 507, 511, 513, 515, 524, 529, 530, 531. In total Akiem has 68 triple voltage Prima's to its disposal. The other six units that were property of Veolia Cargo, eg 37501, 502, 503, 504, 505, and 509, were sold to Europorte.
Also, Akiem manages six Traxx units, property of VC Holding: 185 598, 649 and 650, and the multi system 186 184, 185 and 186. Two of these units were seen in Hennigsdorf recently. - RV/Akiem

There they are, the second pair of Prima units to be available to EuroCargoRail. This time it involves units 27141 and 27159. AKIEM gave them a more neutral trim and decorated them with small ECR logos. They don't have the full ECR livery (with the yellow cabs) as they will only serve as back-up for 27156 and 27161. The pictures shows a convoy fresh from the paint shop. Both Prima's are accompagnied by Akiem's shunters Y 8299 and 8306, also to be leased ECR. - RV

Several BB 27000s, that were formerly operated by Fret-SNCF, are now being repainted in VFLI colours. At least 27116 and 27118 are now restyled.
VFLI is also part of the SNCF organisation. Both engines should now be property of Akiem, the leasing subsidiary of SNCF, founded in 2009. We can expect that in the upcoming years, more and more BB 27000s (in FR), 37000s (FR/DE/CH), 75000s (FR/DE) and 76000s (FR/DE/NL/BE) will be used by other SNCF-operators. ITL for example has also started services with BB 37023, 37024 and 37025 now.

SNCF has founded a new subsidiary for locomotive leasing; Akiem. The company was present on the Transport Messe in Munich last week. SNCF locomotives which are currently underutilised will be available for lease. One can think of modern Prima electrics and diesel-electrics, but also a part of the fleet of 80 Traxx locomotives which will be delivered by Bombardier from 2010. In the beginning, 233 locomotives worth EUR 430 Million will be transferred. Their number will increase to 400 by 2013. - SNCF

On 01.01.2009, the SNCF / Geodis group founded Akiem. It is is a 100% subsidiary of the Transport and Logistic Branch of SNCF and it offers leasing services to operators. Gradually, seventy units of the BB 27000 series became property of Akiem in 2009 and 2010. As long as they have the original SNCF Fret livery, they keep their original service number, but when a unit a repainted, a unit looses the prefix '4' which corresponds to the SNCF intern number system, representing a unit running for the freight division.
The units selected where the SNCF 427111-427180. French operator VFLI was the first to enjoy the new services of Akiem, back in 2009. Since then the BB 27000 fleet is getting more colourful every year, and the list of customers for Akiem is expanding. Some examples up til now:
VFLI
First units to be used by another operator than SNCF were 27138, 27139 and 27140, that were hired to French operator VFLI, also part of the SNCF / Geodis group. They did not change livery at that moment. The first to do so where 27116, 27117 and 27118, hired to VFLI per 01.04.2010. They got a red and grey base livery and were decorated with five-fingered flowers which represent the five base pillars of the VFLI organisation. - VFLI
EuroCargoRail
On 17.05.2010, leasing company Akiem delivered two Prima electrics to freight operator EuroCargoRail, part of the DB Schenker organisation. The BB 27156 and 27162 were partially repainted in ECR corporate colours for this new contract. It's the first time we saw Akiem logos on a locomotive and it's also a first for a non SNCF-related operator to hire units from Akiem. - RV
And on 01.06.2010, the second couple of Prima locomotives to be available to EuroCargoRail was outshopped. This time it concerned units 27141 and 27159. Akiem initially gave them a more neutral trim and decorated them with small ECR logos, as they were planned as back-up for this operator. This changed later on, as 27159 got the ECR full livery for example. The pictures show both units coming right from the paint shop, accompagnied by Akiem's shunters Y 8299 and 8306 also to be leased to ECR. - Akiem
