|
1st order |
In December 2003, the Swiss operator SBB Cargo ordered for the very first time locomotives from Siemens. The choice of manufacturer was a curious one, as just months Bombardier was awarded with a similar order for also 18 multi-systems electrics. The Siemens machines were designated Re474 series in Switzerland and are used for international freight services from and to Italy only, baing at that moment the most economical solution.
|
|
The concept of the Re474 series shows only minor differences compared with the DB 189 series. Reinforced snow-ploughs, couplings that can handle higher loads, pantographs with smaller contacts, a higher low speed traction effort, and different train detection systems on board of course. |
|
Compared with its Bombardier opponent, the designated Re484 series, Siemens had to invest more time and energy to get its locomotives homologated for both Switzerland and Italy. The extra time needed, resulted in Siemens exceeding the delivery deadline of the first 12 machines. In August 2005 it was therefore decided to purchase only 6 of them. Locomotive 13 to 18, were ordered later on, and could therefore be handed over to SBB cargo on time.
|
Luckily, Siemens succeeded in selling to remaining 6 machines to other operators in 2006 and 2007.

[CH] DB Schenker over the Gotthard with SBB Cargo instead of BLS Cargo
It is rumbling on the Gotthard line. After years of cooperation with BLS Cargo, DB Schenker has closed a deal with SBB Cargo in stead for the Gotthard transit services, starting in December 2013. Curious detail is that DB Schenker itself owns 45% of BLS Cargo, the company that now looses an important part of its transport volume.

[CH/IT] SBB Re474 with passenger trains to replace ETR470s?

[CH/IT] SBB Re474 with passenger trains to replace ETR470s?
Since the Cisalpino joint-venture between SBB and Trenitalia has ceased to exist, SBB is operating four ETR-470 train sets from the former Cisalpino-fleet. However, as these trains have one long history of technical difficulties, SBB has decided to take them out of service in 2014. In that year, they will be due for a main overhaul, which will not be executed anymore. Until then, the SBB Basel work shops have taken over the maintenance of the four SBB sets and some extra money will be invested to improve reliability to the end.
On the long term, SBB will receive new train sets for their international trans-alp services, but their delivery is scheduled for 2017. This means there is a gap of at least three years, a period for which an interim solution needs to be found.
This week therefore, trial runs with two SBB Re474 electrics were held between Airolo and Biasca. Maybe they can be an alternative solution, used in sandwich with normal passenger coaches. The images show 474 002 (old numbering type) and 003 (new number placement) and four Bpm61 Refit coaches, combined with measurement car 60 85 99-90 108-9, and a Apm61 Refit. - DM/bahnbilder.de/Bahnonline.de

SBB Re 474: Delivery process |
|
Several Re474s waiting for final approval, so they can start some regular services...
At 09.08.2004, Re 474 001 was the first machine to roll out of the Munchen factories. SBB Cargo Re 482 027 transported it to Bern. After that, various dynamic trials were performed in Switzerland and Italy. It took until 15.05.2005 (other source: 18.04.2005) before the Italian railway authorities, Cesifer, finally approved the Re474 series in its network. Already in the spring of 2005 Siemens had completed the building of 18 machines, so it got quite crowded in the factory halls in the mean time.
Right after that, the exodus of Re474s from Munchen started. 15 machines were transported southwarts, often hauled by quite remarkable locomotives. An overview;

Missing are Re 474 001 (already in Switzerland) and 007/008 that were still needed for trails at the Siemens test centre in Wegberg-Wildenrath in Germany.
The latter two machines mentioned did not come out of this trial process completely unharmed… During a shunting accident both machines got damaged in such a way that a reconstruction of the frame came into question. They were transported back to Munchen for further inspection. Siemens started immediately with building to replacements (#21232 as Re474 007II and #21233 as Re 474 008II).
At 05.08.2005 however, SBB Cargo officially declared in a press statement that they only purchased 12 out of 18 machines. The total batch of 18 was ordered in two stages, and for the first serie of 12, the delivery deadline was exceeded. Next to the damaged 007 and 008, also locomotive 001, 006, 010 and 011 were returned to sender. Luckily, Siemens succeeded in finding new employers for all left-overs. There was now enough time to repair the original Re474 007 and 008, which were then delivered to Dispolok as ES64F4 019 en 020. Re 474 007II/008II and the others were sold to Hector Rail in Sweden and to Italian open access operators.
Re 474 006, 010 and 011 back in Germany, after being turned down by SBB Cargo.
