In the slipstream of the Austrian OBB 1216 series, the Slovenian Railways (SZ) decided to order 20 similar high speed multi purpose locomotives back in 2004. These machines, designated 541 series, are configured for 3kVDC (for Slovenia and Italy), 15kVAC (Austria and Germany) and 25kVAC (Croatia and Hungary) voltage systems. With only minor alterations also 1,5kVDC is possible. Different country specific packages are implemented, resulting in two different sub series. 541 101 was the first to leave the Siemens factories in Munchen, in October 2005, which after completing its trial period, was handed over to the SZ in the summer of 2006.
 In January 2008 the Slovenian government gave official permission for an additional order for twelve machines, delivered in 2009. The order was announced on national Slovenian television. 541-011, the first machine of this batch, was completed in April 2009 and first seen in revenue service one month later.
Lets see how the SZ, in 2009 managing a fleet of 32 modern electrics, will be able to upgrade lines and services so that these becoming more challenging for the 541 series, with its top speed of 230 kph and 6400 kW duration power. For now these impressive performances seem still a bit over the top.

Slovenian locomotive 541-107 is currently in Croatia for tests. A picture from Križevci.
Currently, SZ is having its 541 series locomotives homologated for Croatia. They send every locomotive to Croatia for the required tests. The 541-102, -103 and -104 were on test runs last month. Last week, SZ 541-107 and -109 made their rounds. (Mario Beljo)

Soon, two SZ 541 series locomotives will have a new promotional livery. SZ 541-016 get a while livery about the 100th anniversary of Einstein's relativity theory. The 'Mammut' livry of 541-104 is currently being removed. This machine will re-appear in yellow, in a Chiquita banana livery.

On facebook it is stated that SŽ 541-104 will get a new promotional livery. It will loose its Mammut livery, which will be replaced by a yellow banana livery promoting a famous banana brand. We will wait and see.

On Friday 26.10.2012, two passenger trains hauled by 263 series locomotives collided near Bratislava. Early this morning also a collision took place in Slovenia, where an SZ 541 series locomotive and its international trains crashed into another passenger train.
Update: The 541 locomotive involved is unit 007. Last year, this machine was also involved in a crash with a trainset together with 541.016 in Jesenice on 26.08.2011. - MM

Last Saturday, there was also an open door day at the workshops in Linz (AT). Remarkable: 1116 071 is retrofitted for services in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. ES 64 U2-067 'Siemens Trainguard is still in Linz. DB Schenker 189 048 was in Linz for its R1 overhaul. Fuori Muro's 190 313 now has a blue roof, blue lamp houses and a completely red front. - HP/KB

On [edit] 26.08.2011, two SZ 541 series locomotives (541.007 and 016) were damaged after a frontal collision with a train set (edit: 813-114) in Jesenice [SI]. Today we found a link where you can see that all rolling stock involved is under repair in Ljubljana.

Last June, the work shops of Linz outshopped Hector Rail 242.503 'Balboa' after an extensive refurbishment. That engine was the first ready for services in Sweden. 182.531 'LaMotta' is now in Linz.
Siemens 21415, soon to be delivered to the WLC, and the very last ES64U4 so it seems, is also in Linz. It is painted in green and white. It will get a promotional livery for Hödlmayr.
The same Bahnforum.info show OBB 1116 153 in black, soon to promote the musical CATS.
This week, SZ 541.007 and 016 were damaged in Jesenice (SI). They had a frontal collision with a train set, while heading a freight train. Some extra work for Linz.. - GA

Slovenian electric 541.101 arrived in Croatia last week, to start ES64U4 homologation procedures for this country. RTS 1216 902 left the OBB works shops in Linz lastw eek after being refitted for approval runs in Slovenia.
