The Austrian railway authorities denied the 152 series access to its network. To be able to continue cross border freight services between Germany and Austria, the German state railways Deutsche Bahn then decided to order 25 locomotives identical to the Austrian OBB 1116 series; the 182 series. In 2001 the complete batch was put into service.
Until 2009, the 182 series was mainly used for freight services, despite the fact that they are high performance locomotives. However in the mean time, DB Schenker, the name of the freight division of the DB at that time, got other locomotives that could be used in Austria (185 series). It was therefore decided to sell all 25 units, gradually, to DB Regio.

[DE] Serie 182 and DB Regio - update
At this moment, Siemens in Munich is busy with modifying the 182 series locomotives for DB Regio. They all get a central door control system for double deck carriages and digital destination displays.
As from today, 182 017 and 023 are part of the fleet of DB Regio, only leaving 182 018-022 and 024-025 with DB Schenker. At the end of the year, all 25 units should run for DB Regio.
In the mean time, Siemens has completed the work on twelve units. One of them is 182 004, still with the special silver Porsche livery. The units that still await modification are operated from Erfurt, on the RB 20 between Eisenach and Halle. - DR

[DE] 182 001 testing for regional services
In several stages, DB Regio took over sixteen 182 series locomotives from DB Schenker;
Yes, they all got their simple DB logo back, and they haul rakes of single deck passenger cars, but that does not mean they are full-fledged passenger locomotives. For getting full permission to push and pull for example a rake of double deck coaches, tests have to be done. Unit 182 001 is on its way at this moment for this purpose, together with 120 203. - SC
By the way, also the 182 023 changed its looks recently. After a repair in Cottbus it lost its Railion DB Logistics logos. However, it is still just a normal DB Schenker locomotives.

[DE] time table changes
As of today, many European countries have new timetables. In Germany this has some consequences for modern electrics:
DB Schenker temporarily hires nine 145 series locomotives to DB Regio, to secure the S1 cityservice around Dresden (Meißen-Dresden-Schöna). They replace 143 series engines that have a top speed of only 120 kph. The 145s will be used until there are more 182 series locomotives, coming from DB Schenker, with an approved package for passenger services.
182 013-016 have been sold by DB Schenker to DB Regio per 07.12.2010. So there are sixteen engines by DB Regio now.
Green and silver Traxx units help out in Nürnberg. There DB Regio hires 185 616-619 and 633-634 to haul trains on the extended S-Bahn network. The Traxx units will run on the S3 line between Neumarkt and Nürnberg. In 2007 DB Regio ordered Talent2 trainsets by Bombardier for this network, but they are not available yet.
On 10.06.2010, three more 182 series locomotives transferred from DB Schenker to DB Regio.; 182 002, 006 and 007. Since 13.06.2010 the DB Regio 182s (001-008) are not only runnig RE-services between Leipzig and Cottbus. There are also some IC and EC-Services included now, for example EC 340/341 and IC 2022/2023 (picture). - AS

[DE] 182 series evaluated by DB Regio
Since this week, DB Schenker's 182 series is evaluated by DB Regio on the Cottbus - Leipzig connection. For this experiment the 182 001 is re-allocated to Cottbus. To be able to judge the performances of the ES 64 U2 platform locomotive in revenue service, 182 001 will haul normal passenger trains up till the time schedule change in December 2009. By then, DB Regio hopes to take over several 182 series machines of DB Schenker. DB Regio is very fond of these powerful (6400kW) and fast (230 kph) locomotives, better fitted out for heavy double stock passenger trains and meeting tight running schedules.
By DB Schenker, the 182 series, which only counts 25 units, has become dispensable since the 185.2 series has got full access to Austria. Back in 2000, the 182 series was specifically purchased for services in and into this Alp-country, after the Austrians refused to provide access to the 152 series. - ML
Note that on 182 001 the Railion DB Logistics logos have been removed and replaced by the good old DB logo. The locomotive was also delivered as such. A small difference in respect to the original DB livery is that there is a more space between the white bars up front.

[DE] the DB about its new corporate identity
In the current issue of Railways (01.2008), a magazine published online by the DB/Railion, an article can be found in which the DB makes clear how its new names, logos and identity will be applied on its rolling stock. For locomotives, not much will change; what was expected becomes reality, all machines will get only a DB logo, because this subscribes the neutral character of DB Schenker and DB Intermodal (Both DB subsidiaries for freight operation) in respect to its customers that operate in the (inter)national logistics market too. - Railways / Railion.com

DB 182: General history
All 182 series machines were delivered with small DB logos, only number 014 lost some on its sides pretty soon..
Problems with the 152 series
Because the Austrian federal Railways (OBB) denied the new 152 series freight locomotives running for the DB access to its network, the Germans decided to decrease the number of 152 series machines from 195 to 170, in favour of 25 locomotives identical to the OBB 1116 type. Officially, the OBB refused the 152 series (with more Spartan bogies with nose suspended propulsion systems compared with the OBB 1016 and 1116 series) its homologation for the Austrian network as it was putting too much dynamic load on its infrastructure according to UIC guideline 518. Given the fact that there are several other locomotive types approved for the Austrian network, which exceed the UIC values a lot more, it seems that the OBB used the UIC guideline to slow down the process of competition by foreign companies on its network.
A multi purpose locomotive for the DB after all
Within 5 months (almost the exact time frame the originally planned 152 171-195 would have been delivered) Siemens/KraussMaffei managed to built and deliver the 25 multi purpose locomotives to the DB, designated 182 001-025. As they are only used for freight services, 182 series locomotives in service of DB Schenker do not have the possibility to show their real potential. Parcel Intercity services with a top speed of 140 kph are the most daring task for these machines, but being approved for speeds up to 230 kph, this is still no challenge. Its service domain only includes networks with 15kV AC catenary systems; no profit is taken from the bi-tension possibilities of the 182 series.
182 series: still needed?
Up till today, the182 series is a derogatory member of the DB Schenker fleet, represented by a relative small number of machines and partially misplaced considering its service domain. Its existence was only justified by its privilege to enter Austria. ‘Was’, because in the mean time this right has lost its exclusivity, as DB Schenker's 185.2 series was given full access to Austria in May 2009. As a result, rumours about DB Schenker wanted to get rid of the 182 series got stronger...
In October 2009, DB Regio started an experiment with 182 001, to evaluate the behaviour of these machines in revenue passenger service.
DB 182: Customer specific equipment
182 009 with a commercial look, promoting DHL express and logistics
As already stated, the DB 182 series is almost identical to the 1116 series running for the OBB. Technically they are identical. The Germans however demanded specific add-on features that required a separate approval for Austria. Examples are equipment for GSM based data transfer, systems making it possible to operate these locomotives in multiple traction and from a driving trailer in push/pull service.
DB 182: Liveries
One of 6 machines that had Railion2 logos was 182 020.
original livery
Between 1996 and 2007, the operator of the 182 series changed name several times, by every occasion also corporate logos applied had to be exchanged. The basis however remained the same up till now; body in RAL 3020 ‘Verkehrsrot’ and frame/roof tops in RAL 7012 ‘Basaltgrau’. In 2001, the vlaid name of the operator was 'Deutsche Bahn AG', also on both sides therefore small DB logos were applied. Both front ends of the machines got a similar logo placed in between to small white warning stripes. Service numbers were applied in a different font type than the DIN 1451 standard which the DB generally used for its rolling stock. In stead Siemens/KraussMaffei took a much bolder font similar to the one used for the Dispolok ES 64 U2 series.
a 182 needs a smile! Remarkable is the story about the white warning stripes up front in combination with the curvature of the front panel on which they were applied, resulting in a subtle change of design. During delivery it was concluded that the stripes, being bended downwards by the panel, made the locomotive look a bit sad. Therefore it was decided to flatten the striping on the top, making the engine smile a bit more! 182 010-013 and 015-025 smile, the other machines are up to today a more 'troubled'...
Commercial liveries
Up till now two locomotives served a commercial purpose for customers of the operator; 182 009 promoted DHL, the 182 004 did the same for 'Porsche'.
182 004 painted silver with stylish Porsche logos.
DB > Railion 2 > DB Logistics > DB In 2003 the DB department for freight operation was renamed Railion (the second attempt as this name was already introduced for the first time in the late 90s), also soon Railion logos were applied on 182 series locomotives. Although Railion was a standard for more then two years, only five machines got the corresponding adhesives: In October 2003, 182 022 was the first, four more followed: 182 007, 012, 019 and 020.
In October 2005 Railion was renamed DB Logistics; 18 of 25 units got their DB or Railion markings replaced by DB Logistics logos. As the serie was just getting its first overhaul at that time, they could be applied during regular maintainance. Seven units remained unchanged: 182 004 Porsche, 182 007 being the only one left with Railion 2 logos, and 182 011, 013, 014, 015 and 022 with original DB logos.
Just before the workshops managed to get some new uniformity in the looks, the corporate name was changed again; per November 2007 it is ‘DB Schenker’. This did not have an effect on the looks of the 182 series up til now, but it is most likely to presume that all machines will get their orginal DB logos back.
DB Regio 182 001 did get its DB logos back in October 2009, but for another reason. DB Schenker gave this unit to DB Regio, to be evaluated in revenue passenger services.
DB 182: The Railion liveries
DB 182: to DB Regio
Since the last week of October 2009, DB Schenker's 182 series was evaluated by DB Regio on the Cottbus - Leipzig connection. For this experiment the 182 001 is re-allocated to Cottbus. To be able to judge the performances of the ES 64 U2 platform locomotive in revenue service, 182 001 hauled normal passenger trains up till the time schedule change in December 2009. DB Regio is very fond of these powerful (6400kW) and fast (230 kph) locomotives, better fitted out for heavy double stock passenger trains and meeting tight running schedules.

Back in 2000, the 182 series was specifically purchased for services in and into this Alp-country, after the Austrians refused to provide access to the 152 series.
Just before the new time tables were introduced, the 001 got back-up from another four units: 182 003, 004, 005 and 008, officially sold by DB Schenker to DB Regio on 10.12.2009. On 10.06.2010 three more units were sold to DB Regio; 182 002, 006 and 007. After the small time table change of 13.06.2010, the DB Regio 182s were also used for hauling IC- and EC-services, for example EC 340/341 und IC 2022/2023.
On 08.07.2010 another four units transferred from DB Schenker to DB Regio: 182 009-012.
On 07.12.2010, the next four were sold: 182 013-016.
