The history of electrical railways in Denmark is still very short. It took until the early 80s before first lines were electrified, using the 25kV AC voltage system. Therefore also the electric locomotive is quite new in this Scandinavian country. Up till now only two different series have been built. It started with the EA 3000 series; 22 units built by Henschel/Scandia between 1984 and 1992. These units represented a revolutionairy concept at that time, being one of the first types using a three-phase currency propulsion system. From 1999 on, the EA 3000 got company from, again, a remarkable new machine, the EG 3100 series, up till now the only EuroSprinter locomotive with six axles.

DB Cargo is the new DB Schenker Rail
You may have read about the current re-organization of the Deutsche Bahn. Together with consultation company McKinsey, it is redefining its services and organizational structure, so it can face the rapidly changing market circumstances.
One of the measures taken is the merger of all rail transport services of the Deutsche Bahn into one division now called 'Traffic & Transport'. Railfreight logistics is taken out of the logistics division and will continue under the 'good old' DB Cargo brand name. To the outside world the Traffic & Transport division will brand itself as 'DB' so we don't expect locomotives nor carriages to get DB Cargo logos again. So the DB logo currently in use will stay as it is.
Until the end, all international railfreight divisions (for example DB Schenker Rail Polska and DB Schenker Rail Italia) will be renamed as DB Cargo.
The non-rail logistic services will continue under the name DB Schenker. Separating the rail related activities from the rest fits the strategy to (partially) sell the new DB Schenker. DB has intentions to do this, but faces strong opposition form the German government. To be continued.
For our website, it means we have to rename the owner name of several thousands of locomotives. This will be done in one big batch. We are working on it.

After serving several month just with red lines around the headlights, EG 3104 is completely red now. The new livery was applied at some moment in the past two months. Additionally, next to the nice freight train, we see DBSRS 185 335 be taken to Maschen Yard, too. - VS
EG3104 and EG3112 were the last two machines of their series still sporting the original blue livery. Thanks to you we can now tell that both have been repainted in red in the meantime. Now all 13 units have the red DB Schenker livery with silver cab ends. - RR/SA/JMP

According to our latest information, only two EG3100 locomotives, running for DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia, still have their original blue livery: EG 3104 and EG 3112. The other 11 machines are now red.
The EG 3104 already looks a bit different. Its transition into red has begun with its lamp housings, as the pictures shows. - EA

During the last couple of weeks, DB Schenker EG 3111 has been repainted in the work shops of Høje Taastrup. The result is red locomotive; The basis is the normal DB colour scheme, but it has some additional markings that tell us that these units are part of the DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia loco-pool, a cooperation between DB Schenker Rail Deutschland and Green Cargo. It is the first time that this joint-venture is visible on a vehicle. - PF/JH

Since Monday EG 3103 and EG 3108 of Railion Scandinavia are hanging around the German city of Maschen for driver training. This announces the comeback of these six axle electrics in Germany, starting on 14.12.2008. It's a comeback, as the EGs were already used for nonstop services between Maschen and Denmark until 2004. - DSO

In the current issue of Railways (01.2008), a magazine published online by the DB/Railion, an article can be found in which the DB makes clear how its new names, logos and identity will be applied on its rolling stock. For locomotives, not much will change; what was expected becomes reality, all machines will get only a DB logo, because this subscribes the neutral character of DB Schenker and DB Intermodal (Both DB subsidiaries for freight operation) in respect to its customers that operate in the (inter)national logistics market too. - Railways / Railion.com

DB Schenker EG 3100: general history |
|
Because of the opening of the new Øresund Belt link in 2000, offering a direct link between the Danish, German and Swedish rail networks, the Danish rail operator DSB decided to order thirteen very powerful locomotives. As the EG 3100 are also used in Germany and Sweden, they are bi-voltage machines, being able to run under 15 kV AC catenary additionally, and they are equipped with Swedish/Danich ATC and the German Indusi signalling systems. It was determined that the EG series had to be able to haul 2000 tonnes freight trains through the Great Belt link tunnel and over the bridge, with steap slopes up to 15,6 promilles. For these performances, four axles (almost standard nowadays) just would not suffice, resulting in the development of new three axled bogies. The continuous power rating was set on 6500 kW, the starting traction effort on 400 kN, and its top speed had to be a 140 kph, together a challenging concept for Siemens-KraussMaffei. As the EG 3100 series is not equipped with electrical train heating, they can not haul passenger trains.
DSB decided the place the order on August 22, 1997. The machines would be delivered in 1999-2000 to its independent freight division, DSB Gods.
The EG series are part of the ´EuroSprinter´ familiy, representing the second generation of this uniform platform, of which the DB 152 series more or the less can be regarded as the prototype. Proven components of this type therefore also found their place in the EG series including the shape of the exterior. Many different Siemens factories contributed to the development of the EG series. Traction and electronics parts are build by Siemens Verkehrstechnik. The bogies are built by Siemens Duewag in Krefeld-Uerdingen and Siemens SGP in Graz (Austria). Frames and bodies finally were constructed by Siemens Krauss-Maffei in München, were also final assembly took place. Originally it was planned to paint the locomotives completely red, but in 1998 DSB Gods presented it own style, resulting in a very artistic dark blue livery with blue and yellow details.
The roll-out of the first EG 3100 for DSB Gods took place in München on the August 3, 1999. Then a test program was started. EG 3100 locomotives ran on Siemens' test tracks of Wegberg-Wildenrath (Germany), Velim (near Celeznice in the Czech Republic) and in Germany (e.g. the Frankenwaldbahn for traction effort tests), Denmark and Sweden. On June 9, 2000, first EG 3100 was being used for a commercial service. On June 22, 2000, the first nonstop service from Padborg (German-Danish border) to Malmo (Sweden) was completed. Of course there were the usual starting problems but since the end of 2000 the EG 3101-3113 function very well.
In 2001 DSB Gods was taken over by the German logictics company Railion, and renamed Railion Denmark. In 2008 the company was renamed again as Railion Scandinavia. Except for the removal of the DSB Gods logos in 2001, this has not affected to appearance of the EG 3100 series so far.
