In 1989, the Spanish national railways (Renfe) had to curridge to order 75 bi-tension high performance locomotives with three-phase-technology. In 1991 the first machine was delivered and up to today these S/252 series locomotives play an important role on both the Spanish conventional network with 1668 Iberian track gauge as the ever growing high speed network on that country. This section tells you more about these machines that have played an important role in the development of the Siemens EuroSprinter familiy.
On 07.08.2014, Renfe locomotive no. .252-010-4 caught fire, while running on the Madrid - Barcelona high speed line (LAV). It was on its way with a Tren Hotel to Barcelona/Vigo. Images of the locomotive are here. - AT

[BE] history: Renfe S/252 001 in Belgium
The normal gauge Renfe S/252 series travelled across Europe before they were delivered to Spain. Not only were locomotive used for trials in Italy and Luxembourg. Locomotive no. 001 also visited Belgium in June 1992 for three batches of test runs.
It started with some solo rides between Ath and Silly. Then it performed 200 kph test runs on the Gent St. Pieters - Kortrijk line with two I10-coaches and measure-car no. 13.
Further trials were performed on the Leuven, Ottignies and Libramont line. On 23.06.1992 a train consisting of 252 001-3 hauling SNCB/NMBS locomotive no. 2011 and ten loaded ore wagons completed two successful test runs. On 24.06.1992 the Renfe locomotive hauled two SNCB/NMBS 23 series locomotives with eleven loaded ore wagons, hauling over 1.000 tons.
The image shows locomotive S/252 001 in the workshop of Merelbeke, together with SNCB/NMBS 6205 and 5134. Together they form a nice, yellow ensamble.
In August 1992, the last EuroSprinter locomotive (of the batch of fifteen) built for the Spanish railways Renfe, arrived in Italy for a three week test period. The Italian railways (FS) were interested in new concepts that combined their own 3kV DC voltage system with an AC system. S/252-015 was stationed at Florence during the trial period and completed test runs on the Arezzo-Chiusi line, always accompagnied by FS locomotive E 402 003. The 015 also had the opportunity to show it full potential at the Direttissima Florence-Rome (also with 3kV voltage system!), in which it reached a top speed op 220 kph. On its way back from Italy, the locomotive hauled a 800 tonnes freight train over the Alps. - FdA/EuroSprinter KG Baur.
edit: Back in 1992, the Italian electrified network was still exclusively electrified with 3kV DC, including the 'Direttissima' Rome-Florence (that was the only line on which it was possible to reach 250 km/h). Today only the new high speed lines have the 25kV AC voltage system; the first was the Roma-Napoli, opened in 2005, followed by Torino-Novara-Milano, Bologna-Milano and Firenze-Bologna. Others will follow. Nowadays Rome-Florence is still a 3kV DC line. It used to be the fastest line in Italy, now it has become a bottleneck in the Italian high speed network. - GM
Railcolor: Also, the S/252 did not use its 25kV installation in Italy. Maybe the FS just a very long-term vision in how to use modern locomotives on both the normal and high speed network. Or it was just of interest to find a solution for border crossing services to the North.

Renfe S/252: General history
With the introduction of five prototype electrics by the German rail industry, back in the seventies, the era of three-phase propelled locomotives for passenger services started. Locomotives 120 001-005 delivered to the German railways (DB) set the standard for a batch of another 60 units (120 101-160), still used for various regional and intercity services throughout Germany.
At the end of the eighties, the DB was planning on a multi-purpose derivate of the 120 series, to be built in large numbers as it had take German railways to the next level. However, this 'Project 121' was never realized, due to changing political and economical conditions. Nevertheless, the German industry had already anticipated on this future plan, and different consortia had built several demonstrators to show the DB what was possible with three-phase-technology. Siemens-KraussMaffei constructed the 127 001 'EuroSprinter', often referred to as the godfather of the modern Siemens electrics (and most Siemens products on this website).
But in this section we take you one step back, back to Spain, because the design of the 127 001 did not come out of the blue. It's looks and construction are based on that of the S/252 series built for the Spanish national railways (Renfe), the order that cleared the way for the EuroSprinter family and made it possible for Siemens-KraussMaffei to explore the possibilities of the new technologies in combination with higher speeds, different weather conditions and multi-system usage.
In March 1989, Renfe placed an order for 75 new multi-purpose, high-performance electrics, able to haul 500 tonnes passenger trains at a speed of 220 km/h as well as 800 tonnes freight trains on routes with slopes up to 20 promille.
Spain was by then, and still is, one of the most ambitious countries in Europe when it comes to public transport. In the past decades the government has invested large amounts of money in new infrastructure and new rolling stock. In 1988 it was decided to start building the first high speed lines, that, as they could become part of a of a pan-European network in a distant future, had to meet European standards. This resulted in a complete new type of infrastructure on the Iberian peninsula. These new lines have 1435 mm European gauge (Iberian gauge is 1668 mm) tracks and a 25kV AC voltage system (3 kV DC is used for the classic network). Next to this, there is always the ongoing discussion in Spain to redesign the complete railways system for 1435 mm gauge. However, as this is very expensive, it is unlikely that it will ever happen.
Renfe decided that the S/252 series had to be compatible with all this infrastructural parameters. This has resulted in a batch being a mix of single- and multi-system electrics, continuously changing bogies, changing gauge width.
Siemens was the leading manufacturer of a German-Swiss consortium, also including Krauss-Maffei from Munich, Thyssen-Henschel and ABB Verkerstechnik from Zurich. These companies had to collaborate closely with several manufacturers from Spain; Meinfesa from Valencia (now Vossloh Espana) and the CAF-factory in Barcelona. All components for the first batch of 15 units were built and assembled in Switserland and Germany. With sufficient help, Meinfesa completed 45 units of the 'Spanish batch' of the serie, CAF assembled 15 locomotives.

Track gauge of various bicourant locomotives changed during the past decades. Between 1997 and 2000, S/252 011-015 got 1668 mm gauge bogies. In 2002 eleven units (S/252 012, 015, 017-018, 020, 024-028, 031) were selected for running on the Madrid-Lleida high speed line and got 1435 mm normal gauge bogies instead of 1668 mm. (situation 30.11.2004). On 05.11.2009, the situation was again different, at that moment units S/252 001-008, 010-012, 015, 017, 020, 024-028 were normal gauge.

Renfe S/252: Liveries
Amarillo-grey with AVE logos
During its trial phase, S/252 001 was painted in the standard Renfe colours 'amarillo' and grey. It also carried AVE logos. Before the machine was delivered it was repainted in white.
white with AVE logos
All 15 locomotives of the 'German-Swiss batch', S/252 001-015, were delivered in a white livery with AVE logos. Remarkable is that S/252 009 has been spotted with two AVE logos on its side.
ammarillo and grey
All sixty units that were built in Spain by CAF and Meinfesa, S/252 016-075 were delivered in the standard Renfe livery of that time; ammarillo-grey with large service numbers on both sides. S/252 012, 014 and 015 were also repainted in these colours later on.
Grandes Líneas - Arco
At the end of the nineties, Renfe introduced new product names for several high quality services. 'Arco' services were introduced between Barcelona - Valencia - Alicante, Barcelona-Andalucia and Vigo-Hendaye. S/252 units hauling these trains got a special white livery with a large blue arc. This livery is only applied on Iberian-gauge units.
Grandes Líneas - Altaria
Similar to the Arco livery is the Altaria-version, applied on locomotives running between Madrid-Barcelona, Madrid-Pamplona, and Madrid-Alicante, mostly with Talgo VII-rakes. Only Iberian guage units got the Altaria livery. During the past years, both the Arco and Altaria logos were gradually removed from all S/252s, so there is also a version of this white and blue design without logos.
Operadora standard
A few years ago, Renfe introduced a complete new corporate identity for its entire fleet, developed by design agency Interbrand. It resulted in two different liveries for the S/252 series. The units with Iberian gauge bogies, used for 'standard' intercity passenger services, are being repainted in white and dark grey, decorated with two lila stripes and a large lila Renfe logo.
Operadora high speed
The locomotives that have normal guage bogies and therefore slso used on the various Spanish high speed lines (on 05.11.2009: S/252 001-008, 010-012, 015, 017, 020, 024-028, source listadotren.es) get the CO-version of the high speed department. These machines are again white, with a dark grey arc on both sides and a silver and lila stripe. The Renfe logo is identical to the normal version of this livery. The headlights of these machines are connected by a dark grey bar.
Renfe Mercancias
On 21.12.2010, Renfe started freight services to France with S/252s. For this purpose, four units, 252 017, 024, 025 and 028 were adjusted an got additional Mercancias-logos. There are two versions, one is based on the Operadora high speed livery, the other one on Operadora standard. The latter one is applied on 252 019 for example.
Renfe Integria
Somewhere in 2012/2013, three locomotives got Renfe Integria logos. This resulted in two new livery variations. 252 013 in blue and white with the Integria logos. 252 047 and 067 already had the Operadora standard livery so they just got extra Integria inscriptions. Renfe Integria is the division of the Spanish railways responsible for maintenance and spare parts.

Renfe S/252: international freight services to France
On 21.12.2010, Renfe and SNCF Geodis (Naviland Cargo) started a freight service from Barcelona via Perpignan in Spain to France: the BarceLyon Express. For this purpose, Renfe adapted four normal gauge S/252s and two 319 series diesel locomotives for services over the new high speed line from Figueras to Perpignan, so they could reach the Perpignan International freight yard from Barcelona and go into France from there. The French safety authority EPSF approved the locomotives on 16.12.2010 for the French network.
The four S/252 units involved are 252-017, 024, 025 and 028. They are quite easy to distinguish, as they got additional Mercancias logos.
